I'm living in a rental in Perth with my partner and our dog, and this property needs a lot of work! We have disinterested property management and ownership, and a lot of the tasks are falling onto us. We enjoy the challenges, but are very new and are endeavouring to learn the tricks of the trades! In the following, I'll outline some of the projects and approaches we've employed. The biggest project is the yard: it was almost entirely sand, with the only greenery coming from broadleef weeds and various types of clover. We've since defeated the weeds - curse you, Capeweed! - and are in the process of restoring, expanding, and thickening the lawn. The strategies that I've employed since August, and each to various degrees of effectiveness, are: investing dozens of hours into manualing pulling up the weeds; spreading Garden Basics Lawn Repair Lawn Seed and Fertiliser; using Seasol EarthCare Organic Weedkiller; spraying Amgrow Wettasoil; spraying both Yates BuffaloPro Weed 'n' Feed and Scotts Lawn Builder Buffalo Weed, Feed, and Green Up (these two were a game changer; I wish that I had done this first!); and spreading Scotts Lawn Builder All Purpose Slow Release Fertiliser. Despite using those products, approximately ten metres square of my yard, located underneath a readily shedding tree, has remained sandy, and lawn has struggled to spread at any considerable rate. In response, I've applied in early October: Richgro 'Natural Sand to Soil' Soil Improver and sown Scotts Lawn Builder Warm Climate Tough Custom Grass Seed - I'm very excited to see how it develops! I'm using an Ozito ELM-1230 lawn mower, and have been experiencing challenges in learning how best to maintain the blades (see my post for developments). But despite the trials and tribulations, the yard is slowly transforming and it's incredibly rewarding! We're also working on converting and switching out fluorescent light fixtures (the ones installed are designed for hospitals), fixing kitchen cabinetry that is comprised of rotting MDF, restoring bathroom grout and tiles to their shining glory, and replacing the bathroom vanity that is seemingly defying gravity purely by our positive vibes and well wishes. Just recently, my partner has converted one of our many single power outlets to a double - electrical endeavours worry me, but she's very impressive! Workshop is a wonderful community and I look forward to learning from everyone!
