What timber and stain do you think this is?

I posted this on the gallery after seeing it and loving it on Instagram. User @mamrbd would now like to know what timber and stain it is, as well as an idea on cost. Does anyone have any suggestions for him?

I have a feeling it is Japan Black finish, a darker hardwood would colour up easier than pine and be harder wearing but there are some photos of pine having been used floating around.
