How to attach a pull up bar to the wall?

Thank you for sharing your question about attaching a pullup bar on your wall. Instead of using timber, I suggest having a look at the Pillar 16mm x 2.0m Brushed Chrome Curtain Rod which fits perfectly on the Sandleford 16mm Stainless Steel Pillar End Fitting Rod - 2 Pack and the Sandleford 19mm Stainless Steel Pillar Centre Fitting Rod. These should be enough to provide adequate support as a handhold. I suggest using the Ramset 8 x 50mm Universal Anchor - 20 Pack to anchor the pillar ends to the wall.

Unfortunately, 12.7 is too small for the Sandleford Pillar ends. However, if wood is the material that you do need, I propose using the 16mm Dowel Tasmanian Oak Select 3.0m instead so that it fits into the pillar ends.

I want to do something similar but for Adult and because my bar will be in the living room, i want it to be removable

SO for example - where you see the orange line - this can be permenently in the wall (and should be white to match the wall colour) but I would like it so that the 'holder' where the black line is can be removed for occasions where I'm hosting guests..

It would be nice if the bar is timber as it feels nicer on the hands but is not critical

any ideas?

Because the handrail will be used by an adult, it must comply with the relevant grab rail requirements for AS1428.1. A timber rail will not be strong enough to hold an adult. I can only suggest using the HomeCare by Caroma 900mm Brushed Nickel Straight Grab Rail or similar. I suggested using the Caroma brushed handle as it is very low key and does not call attention to itself unlike a stainless-steel finish. Plus, it also has a low profile as it is only 58mm from the wall.

Please ensure that the handrail is securely installed and firmly anchored to the wall to prevent any risk of detachment or structural failure.

What about another solution - What is you drill a hook of some sort into the wall and I simply wrap my Angle90 grip thing around it (I realise the image below is a bar but i just need a hook of some sort for the strap to latch onto

Even if I recommend a very large hook for example like the Pfeiffer 100mm Black Square Storage Hook. It is still not technically covered under the grab rail requirements for AS1428.1. It has to be certified safe for use for an adult. Without the accompanying testing certificate, any hook or fitting you utilize cannot be considered certified. Certification ensures that the product has undergone thorough testing to meet relevant safety and performance standards. Without this verification, there is no guarantee that the hook or fitting complies with established guidelines for structural integrity, load-bearing capacity, or safety.

Going through the thread I hadnt considered the rules associated with a handrail. I really should have had that as my first stop in the figuring out process 🙂 If its a chair that is what the bar will be used to stand up from would it be feasable for one of those chairs that electrically rises to a standing position to help with getting out of them?

Other then the Bar idea how about a post with a wide plate that tucks under the seat itself? Like a bollard but thin plate at the base and a taller post? You could potentially use the grip you are refering to (with the banannas) fixed to the post?

Hi @Dave-1 Dave - I think you might have misunderstood.

I'm looking for a "discrete" or more "elegant" pullup solution. I find the store bought ones are quite large/bulky and dominate the space.

Eric explained that any solution i use should to comply with AS1428.1. So he suggested the Grab Rail as my Pull Up Bar.

I'm happy the 'support' to be in the wall permanently (ideally white like the walls) but ideally the bar itself and the part the holds the bar, would be removable or at least low profile.

The bar would be placed on the wall section above the big gap leading to the hallway....As you can see, it part of the larger living room so do want to maintain aesthetics and ideally be able to remove when I have guests

Could you please tell us more about the use of the grip? The grab rail regulations spoken about earlier are for support rails. From a brief Google search, it appears this grip device is not specifically used for support but more for workout routines. Please note that grab rails are for support, such as in slippery wet areas and when assistance is required when getting up from chairs etc. They are not designed to be used as Pull Up bars.

Since the device does not appear to be for support and slip prevention, I don't believe its attachment would need to be in line with regulations on grab rails. It sounds like you should be able to attach it to a wall with a large screw eye into a timber stud.

I can confirm that we don't stock any wall-attached rails that would be suitable for this, and certainly not any that are detachable. Attaching large screw eyes or hooks directly into the timber studs would likely be the most sturdy mounting option for them.

I get the impression, 'King - Leviathan' @Kingleviathan is a muscular dude looking for a bar (that can be removed) for pull-ups or what I would call chin-ups.

The '90 thingy' seems to be specifically designed for this - and barbells.

If you did want to create a bar @Kingleviathan that would support your body weight, you'd need to consider using something heavy-duty such as a couple of Brasshards Galvanised Round Flange With 25mm Drill Malls fixed in the studs or brick wall, then a couple of standoff Brasshards 25 x 100mm Galvanised Pipe sections, some Brasshards 25mm Galvanised Female And Female Elbows and then a Brasshards 25 x 600mm Galvanised Pipe for the bar.

Unfortunately, this wouldn't be a detachable arrangement.

Mate - I haven't done a chin-up for 50 years. 😁

When I did, at home, it was a purpose built telescoping bar that fitted in a doorway.

Wouldn't that be better than trying to engineer a bar on a wall - particularly due to the forces involved?

The bar I had - was then removed by 'pushing up' to release from two plates attached to the door frame.

The body-weight kept the bar in place.

That's not a bad suggestion, @Kingleviathan. Could you use your grips on a door pull-up bar? If so, we have a variety of different pull-up/chin-up bar products that might be able to serve that purpose.

I'm familiar with these...It certainly would be easier

I use the Angles90 grip as it allows full movement through the wrist and shoulders (I find holding the bar itself hurts my write as its very rigid). If i strapped the Angles90 to one of these bars that go into the door, then i would be too low to the ground.

I can also use the Angles90 as a pulley with rope and weight on the end - not sure that door bar would work for this.

Just had a look online for some pullup bars

Wall Mounted Pull Up Bar This is the one I thought wa sbetter structually to carry the bodys load on the wall supports. I would mount it upside down tho for the space you are wanting.

and then saw this one

Wall Mounted Chin Up Bar Pull Up This one is the one that has a smaller profile but the bracket looks like its more fit for purpose to hold the pullup/chinup bar with a bodys weight.

Depending on your wall you will either need to install dynabolts if its brick/concrete or large screws into a timber stud to support it.

Ive been trying to think of a way to be able to remove easily and put back but cant work out one that would be fit for purpose.

I did have a look at Bunnings heavy duty bracks as well as tool mount brackets in case one might be able to be repurposed. I couldnt really see something Id be happy to suggest. This one Carinya 350 x 350mm Galvanised Heavy Duty Brace Stay Bracket might be suitable but then you will have to figure something that will keep the Bar in place (I thought a piece of timber with the bar halfcut into bolted tothe top two holes of the bracket) that wayyou could remove the bar if wanting to. Not sure how safe it would be and also its still a fair amount of strain on the studs of the wall that have not been built with that in mind.

Fabricate (weld) a 'hook' system that attaches/detaches two arms - that ultimately support the bar.

Serious steel - something like 40 mm X 10mm and on it's edge with steel triangular wedges welded 10 mm back from the hooks.

Once the arms are positioned, with any flex down, these 'triangles' will meet the front and stop any further flexing. I think the mounting screws/bolts must be well above this point - not like traditional brackets.

Just a doodle thought.

What about something like this

My doors are frameless... but maybe i could put some kind of wood or metal that painted to match the colour (cold white) of my wall that acts as the frame for the silicon to sit on.

If this sounds like a good plan what would i buy and any considerations?

Mmm the first option of that clamp is a no go lol 🙂 Most trim around the doorframe is tacked on with just nails. It would make for an interesting video of failure 😕 🙂

The second bar option could work but the lintel area above the door is unknown. At the moment its been built for plaster and holding the area up,it would not have been built for an extra 80-100kgs of weight. I like how the large piece of timber would distribute the weight. If you look at the right hand side of your door frame there isnt a large piece of tyimber to transfer your weight down to the floor.

Imagine that piece of timber all the way across the opening but ony held up by a small amount on one side and ?? the other. If you could find the studs above the opening and screwed the plate to them you still end up with the overall weight being transferd downwards. Maybe adding a post either side of the door frame so you can then install the cross beam? Now that would work. It requires considering a few extra things and how to attach your bar but doable.

So this is what the door area where i want the bar to go. (There is no door but i think there was in the past before i lived here). The wall is brick.

Brick changes things for sure, The doorway should have some kind of lintel across it. I would expect a lintel to be able to carry the weight but could not say for sure. I still think the easiest way to have a support for a pull up bar is the two posts notched with a beam across them. You can also attach it to the wall but this will take the stress from the Lintel and put it on the posts.

Have you considered the RTM Wall Mounted Chin Up Bar Pull Up, it is one of the most compact chin-up bars available on the Bunnings website. Since it is painted white, it should blend in nicely and not stand out in your entrance. But in regards to mounting, I agree with @Dave-1's idea of posts and a beam going across.

The Amazon illustration shows a total of eight bolts on the ends and two to connect the raw timber.

My 'experience' with bricks and hammer drills has shown you can blow significant pieces of brick away as the drill exits the opposite side.

This could happen eight times - in those two confined areas.

Plus you may drill just the mortar - and not the brick. The render will certainly be damaged.

Something to consider?

I also feel if you keep doing this, the coach screws will eventually lose traction.

I take it the wood seen - is not part of the kit?
