Woodworking Challenge - Heart-shaped planter box

It looks pretty straightforward really, make a template of the heart design on butchers paper or a piece of cardboard from a packing box to the size you want. Then use that to transfer your design to plywood (or pallet boards) Once you have the backboard cutout start cutting boards to the longest straight length to form the body/walls and finally the smaller cuts for the rounded/angled corners for the top of the heart shape, mitering those cuts so that the boards can be glued together. Cut the top boards for the height you wish the planter section to be and secure with glues and nails.
Once you have made all the cuts to make one planter place them together in a dry fit, number the pieces and use them all as templates for subsequent builds.

On another note, can I make this challenge more interesting by offering a reward? Whoever makes the most beautiful heart shaped wooden planter (including succulent arrangement) gets 1 kilo of their favourite biscuits (ha should I say cookies) baked from scratch by yours truely?

I may be a novice woodworker but I am an excellent baker.

@Kim2Australian Shareholders Association, currently Technical Officer and Assisting Education Officer neither of which I look like losing next week.

I have made a start on this Heart Planter but am thinking a slightly different design (which will be easier to make)
I was going to use pallet wood but had some Pine Matchboard laying around and have decided to use this, also being tongue and groove no need to mess around with biscuit joints.

I cut a board into 500mm lengths to make two roughly 500mm x 500mm panels,

Glued and clamped together.
Once the glue has cured I needed to cut out the heart shape, I decided to make a half heart shape as the front of the planter. This could be done with a template and jig saw but I have a small CNC Router so I drew the design in the software and cut them out using that.

That is as far as I have got for now and I am wondering whether it is even necessary to box in around the top of the heart or just leave it as a flat back and just box in the planter section. I think it would look equally attractive and with far less work required.
I am open to suggestions.

Woahh Wayne, THIS IS GORGEOUS!!!!!

It looks HUGE, the cuts are super clean with that CNC router, I vote leave the top of the heart open.

Its always been my dream to start a social enterprise, would you be interested in collaborating on a project to sell these on my Etsy store? I have a lot of traction with succulent loving people but my woodworking skills are currently terrible so I can't offer them any cool wooden things. DM me if you are interested - I want the profits of any heart shaped succulent planter sales to go to you (the makers and creators)

It is heavy, getting it to hang flat would be a challenge. I will i think make a small stand for it so it can live near the back door, not enough free wall space to hang it.

I was going to put a false panel in mine so that the soil was only about 150mm deep.
I am held up with mine they have moved things around at the mens shed and there is no 3 phase power for the big band saw yet which I need to cut the side panels to shape.

I had to put this aside with other projects needing completion but got a bit more done today.

I used some 90 x 35mm pine and used the heart shape as a template to draw a line to create the form of the sides, then used the bandsaw to cut out the shape for both sides. They were not perfect but near enough and could be sanded once assembled.

I glued and brad nailed the front and back to the sides and left it for the glue to cure, once dry I used a belt sander to clean up the edge profiles.

I gave the front and back panels a light sanding to clean up the faces.

I glued and nailed a board across the back for added strength and will probably attach a rope hanger for it. Possibly stainit in a dark colour and apply a finish to provide some protection from water and weather.

O hey - question for Jason.

I was trying to find some info on whether Bunnings will cut wood for you?

Like, if I want to make a basic kidney-shaped side-table; I just need the pieces: top, and maybe 3 legs. But I want to assemble and stain it myself. And bring the wood I want cut (or buy some there).

Do you - or any of these woodworkers - know the answer to this? 🙂

I have succulents in mine, while it was made for someone else I have not yet had it needs to be white or throw it away! So she is either happy with it or has bigger fish to fry for now...
