Double glaze window

I am purchasing a house with a mixture of wooden double hung and aluminum sliding windows and want to replace the glass with double glaze starting with the wooden windows. Has anyone done this? Can I just swap the panes or do I have to replace the whole window? Any tips?

Havent decided yet. Im in Tamworth , I have helped do aluminium windows for my parents we took out the existing windows and replaced the lot took half an hour per window, easy job. The wooden windows have me questioning whether its better to replace existing glass with double glaze by routing a deeper rebate or just put a second pane of glass on the other side of the window. I am worried about mold between the panes.

@Rusty-Saw, I remember you had experience with stained glass. Is there any assistance you could offer @JDE for replacing windows with double glazing?

Sorry, no real window experience from me @JDE although in my new house I'm building I have 10.5mm panes of glas which reduce outisde noise by over 40% and have great energy ratings too (although cant remember that stats). So you could consider thicker glass rather than double glazing. http://www.viridianglass.com/products/noise/vlam-hush (the 34% reduction is based on the 6.5mm option)

Thanks ProjectPete have looked into it before, while thicker glass is better, its no where near as good as double glaze for thermal purposes

I remembered I was curious about this myself so had a poke around. Looks like it's certainly achievable as long as the timber frames are in good condition.

Hi @JDE @You’ve probably well finished by now but years ago when I did lead lighting I added an extra layer of glass to the frame and used silica gel crystals to absorb condensation between the panes. It worked well for the years I was in that house.
