Keeping old trades alive
I enjoyed this Herald Sun article on the weekend talking about how craftspeople were trying to keep old trades alive. It featured a chairmaker, bookbinder, glassblower and a guy who makes musical instruments. It also talked about how there is something of a resurgence in hand-made and DIY and some people are moving away…

How to stop mulch from blowing away?
It's been really windy lately and our mulch keeps getting blown away. Googling for suggestions I noticed MulchGard but it doesn't appear to be available in Oz. Any other suggestions?

Homemade mailbox
Anyone built their own mailbox? I'm thinking it would be a fun project. I Googled for some inspiration and there was some strange, amusing and creative examples.

Show off your mancave
I like seeing photos of people's handiwork in the Aussie mancaves Facebook page. Here's a good one I saw recently of an old shed turned into a backyard pub.

D.I.Y. water fountain for struggling wildlife
Simple PVC water fountain strapped to a star picket and placed under a tree and amongst some bushes for shelter. Great idea to help struggling wildlife searching for water during the drought and bushfires by aridrecovery.org.au

Take care when on the tools
Between 2006 to 2014, seven per cent of Australian hospitalised injuries were attributed to power tools. A third of injuries were caused by grinders, mostly causing lacerations; followed by saws, causing amputation in about 15.5 per cent of cases; then welders, causing flash burns in 66 per cent of incidents, and drills,…

Fiberglass or Concrete pool?
The Mrs and I have seen a fiberglass selfcleaning pool and it seems a ripper. These jets pop out the bottom and move all the water and leaves around. Some mates think they are cheap looking compared to concrete but it seems they have improved a lot. We were thinking we would rather save a bit of cash and put it into…

Love this Harry Potter inspired coffee table with its magic wand key and hidden compartments. I'm sure some of the talented woodworkers here could build something similar!

M&M colour sorting machine
Love this automatic sorting machine that can seperate different coloured M&Ms and Skittles. I immediately wondered whether @AndrewJones could build one given some of his creative uses of micro PCs. But it would have to be wood! Do we have any other electronics wizards in the community who could give this a crack?

See through walls
Walabot - looks like a pretty nifty gadget. You can use it to find plastic and metal pipes, studs, wires, etc. It can see to a depth of 10cm and can also be used for pest detection.

Anyone made a fidget spinner?
Just wondering if any of the clever makers on here like @Wayne, @She_Skills or @AndrewJones have made a fidget spinner? I saw someone on Instructables has given it a bash and it doesn't look too difficult.

Does your plumbing include flexible braided hoses?
Keen to hear more stories from plumbers about flexible braided hoses. It seems many are failing after 10 years. The potential damage a burst hose can cause is alarming. http://www.theage.com.au/business/consumer-affairs/flexible-braided-pipes-responsible-for-more-than-20-per-cent-of-water-damage-claims-20170503-gvy8l0.html

How do you stop burglars?
There's an article doing the rounds that suggests the things that robbers look for when looking at houses to rob. It has things like rundown front doors with single locks, overflowing mailboxes, dark and overgrown areas and visible interiors. All pretty obvious things that would make a house enticing for a robber. I'm more…

Barbecue and fire pit in one
Wow - love the look of this. It would be a great central point of the backyard and cooking would be more social and fun. Looks like you can get really hot temperatures for searing and the lovely smokey flavour that you want from charcoal or wood cooking with no flare ups. Clean up is super easy - just scrape into the fire…

What's the strangest thing you've seen a neighbour doing?
Our neighbour recently removed some trees and we now have a view directly into their backyard. Which is OK as the neighbours are pretty quiet and don't seem to be around much. But I am thankful it wasn't done earlier. The previous neighbour had a motorbike and used to ride in circles around his backyard, which I found very…

How are you helping your kids afford a home one day?
Our first mortgage was $100,000. I didn't want to borrow any more than that - it felt like we could never pay it back. But now it seems we were extremely lucky to be able to buy a modest home in the inner city and that our kids might find it near-impossible without our help. I'm interested to know if any Workshop members…
