How to tighten Ryobi whipper snipper handle and guard?

Hi there

I'm going out of my mind with frustration. My Ryobi whipper snipper has two points where no matter how much you tighten the screws/wingnuts etc, the handle and guard will slip and move around the pole. It's out of warranty but I really want to sort this out. I've attached picture where I'm meaning

Just a quick thought @DeeS

If the nut/bolt/screw at the handle is not compromised and the plastic intact - maybe a piece of electrical tape wrapped around the metal will provide that tightening diameter required. But why this is happening for you now - I don't know.

Bicycles are notorious for odd diameter steel tube - and I've found electrical tape great for fitting some bicycle accessories.

But I don't know what's happening at the cutting end of your Ryobi.

It's great that you've received excellent advice from @Noyade.

I've run into the same issue with my line trimmer and despite numerous attempts at tightening the fittings it still slides. I've managed to fix it by applying large strips of rubber band to the pole and sandwiching it between the plastic assembly. My best advice is to use large wide strips not the thin type of rubber band.

Personally, I've not heard any reports regarding this issue. I've not seen Ryobi's new setup for the handles, perhaps I'll have a look on the weekend. I only have a cheap Homelite set but it does the job.

I’ve got the same problem. The strimmer is brand new, but the new handle fastener doesn’t even come close to securing. Hard to believe that this design got through to production.

Can you advise the model number of your whipper snipper so I can help troubleshoot?

Some photos of the issue would also help me offer my best advice.

If the handle uses a clamping mechanism, then adding a few layers of electrical tape around the shaft may help.

I propose removing the handle and wrapping the body with a few wide pieces of rubber band. It has to be flat enough that you can still slide the handle and guard over the rubber band into place. The rubber band will stop the handle and guard from sliding on the smooth surface of the whipper snipper.

As @EricL mentioned, removing both the guard and handle and then wrapping something like a few rounds of cloth tape (maybe easier to source than rubber band) which will increase the diameter of the shaft allowing both parts to clamp down tight.

If this fails, then p[lease send through actual photos from either side of the fixing/tightening screws sections of both parts so we can see whats going on.

Hi @DeeS,

I have two XU1 trimmers that have the same problem so I removed the handles and applied double sided tape around the inside of them.

Worked for me and the grip height can still be adjusted but need to back off clamp tension when making adjustments.

Wondering when manufactures of garden tools will realise clamping smooth plastic to smooth metal will likely cause problems for the user.

For ill fitting 'devices' on a bicycle frame - I just use a few revolutions of black electrical tape.

Have had the same issue - very frustrated at what appeared to be poor design. However, realised the bracket needs to sit in the space on the handle. If you put the pieces together off the pile it becomes apparent.

Can you please double check if the screw can be positioned in a different manner? Perhaps something like a washer got stuck in the top head section of the screw. It is a bit of a mystery that the screw would position itself in this manner. If you look at the earlier posts above there is a clear photo showing the screw positioned in the correct manner. But if after a thorough investigation and there is literally nothing blocking the screw and it still positions itself in that manner then there is perhaps a fault, and I suggest bringing back the unit where you purchased it from and speaking to the power gardening specialist and showing them what has happened. Once the gardening specialist has had a look they will make a determination if the unit is faulty and will need to be exchanged.

Unfortunately, no, the bolt is a fixed component of the handle itself so can't be moved or adjusted.

If it is not the bolt there may be other factors that are involved in regards to locking clip of the handle. Have you tried to push the clip down with a fair bit of force to line up with the bolt? This might be necessary in order to get a tight fit on the body of the trimmer.

When the clip is inserted into the handle, the bolt/bracket hole are offset by over half the width of the bolt. No amount of force is going to overcome that.

R36LTR24 the manual is hopeless to interpret and everything I've found online says to insert the bracket into the handle, which in my case then doesn't fit (as per the photo above).

Some step looks like it has gone wrong as that screw is far out of whack. I think @EricL's offer to stop by a store and have a look is a nice offer and will wait to see what he finds out. I know I have spent numerous hours arguing with myself over my interpretation of something obvious in the install instructions only to have someone else see it differently (and happened to be correct). I am hoping that this is the case as well so you can get it solved. 🙂

I've had a thorough look at the handle attachment process. What I noticed is that the screw that is used must be seated properly so that it stands vertically. Its square head must settle into the four plastic locking slots in the handle. You'll notice in the photo that it stands vertical and not at an angle. Next is that the metal clamp and the plastic handle must meet on the left-hand side first. Imagine a hinge where one side is attached first. Do not install the handle in all the way as this prevents the metal clamp from travelling properly around the pipe.

The handle and the metal clamp must come together like crocodile jaws clamping on a post. When brought together at the same time the steel clamp does not catch on the steel pole and provides a solid clasp to pole instead. Once seated correctly you can then install the butterfly nut and tighten accordingly. I've placed some photos below to give you an example of how its done.

Please give it another try and let us know if you succeed in clamping the handle to the post.

Thanks Eric. The L must be short for legend.

The bolt in the handle was offset on an angle, and set hard so looked to me like it was a fixed part.

A light tap with a hammer and it popped right out and I was easily able to re-seat it secure everything in place (as you can see the dog was impressed)

Can you tell me what store you work at so I can provide some feedback about what a great help you've been?
