Hi,I have an old fence/barrier made of treated pine logs bolted to plates and these are bolted to very large metal posts/girders. The plates and bolts are rusted through and the pine logs are splitting. I can't find any replacement plates nor brackets. How should I attack this? Thanks!
Hi @MSSM,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is great to have you with us.
Unfortunately, I think the logs may be too split to simply replace the bracket and fixings. The closest options I can find for you to replace the round logs are 150mm 3.0m Pole H3 Treated Pine Radiata Round or 115mm 3.0m H4 Pole Treated Pine. Please keep in mind that you would need to check with your local store whether they keep these in stock or would need to Special Order them, as stocked items may vary from store to store.
If you are looking to replace the rusted brackets and fixings, I suggest using Dunnings 140 x 40mm Galvanised Metal Plate. While not the exact same dimensions, it should be adequate for this purpose. To fix this plate to the post I suggest using Zenith M10 x 150mm Hot Dipped Galvanised Hex Head Bolt and attaching this to the logs using Zenith M10 x 90mm Hot Dipped Galvanised Hex Head Coach Screws.
If you were looking to remove the existing barrier all together, might I suggest having a look at these handy articles on fencing:

If you have any further questions, please feel free to get in touch.

Afternoon/evening @MSSMĀ
Is your plan to replace the round logs with new round logs? Still 125mm diameter?
How many brackets do you need?
Yours look home made with very thick flat plate.
Just some pre-lunch Sunday doodles.
Hi @JacobZĀ - the links to the pine rounds above aren't working for me?
But should @MSSM be interested in downsizing to 100mm diameter Pine Logs I'm keen to help fabricate something for you, like the top left.
See what you think.
Cheers.
Hi @Noyade,
Timber availability can be location-specific, so it sounds like those items are unavailable in your area. You might find this link works better for you: 150mm 3.0m Pole H4 Treated Pine Round Wet. You can see what's available in your location by searching "pole log" on the Bunnings website.
Mitchell
Hi, thanks for all that extremely helpful info.
Do you think gluing the logs with epoxy might be viable?
Thanks
Hi,
I'm hoping to keep the logs and repair them with epoxy, if viable. Otherwise I'd need to replace them.
From memory there are approx 10 to 12 logs in total.
Thanks!
Actually I was toying with the idea of using L brackets and supporting the logs from underneath, but I can't find anything online that would work.
Thanks.
Glueing the logs doesn't sound like a very effective long-term solution, @MSSM. It could potentially give you a few more years before they need to be entirely replaced.Ā
There is quite a large range of angle brackets available. If there is a specific size you need help locating, I'd be happy to take a look for you.
Hi Mitchell,
It would need to be a bracket that can be mounted through a single M16 hole. I can't find any like that.
Hi @MSSMĀ
You would probably need to modify the bracket in order for it to work. Especially if you used a large bracket such as the Dunnings 100 x 100 x 35mm M10 Galvanised Angle Bracket. The holes would need to be enlarged and relocated so that it supports the posts properly.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

"It would need to be a bracket that can be mounted through a single M16 hole. I can't find any like that."
Morning @MSSMĀ
You could possibly utilise the same steel plates and bolts you already have - bring it to the post with the brackets mentioned above mounted to support the posts. Possibly bending the lips for a better fit around the logs. But that plate is thick - you mentioned 8mm on the previous page. I'd be using a drill press.
Just a thought.
EDIT ; Just realised! You already have the holes! š Via the coach screws.
No need for a drill press.
Very interesting. I hadn't thought of that. I will consider this option.
However, be aware @MSSM - that looking at your second photo from the bottom, it's most likely when you place the plate and bolt hard against the post - there will be no thread for your nut on the other side. You'll probably need shorter bolts. Hard to tell from this side of the monitor.
Cheers and good luck!
Good MorningĀ @MSSMĀ
When you say "rusted through" are there others that are in worse state then the brackets you have shown? These look like they could be removed, cleaned and rust converted back to be usedĀ again if you wanted.
The state the rails are in look like they are at the end of their useful life as rails. You could also bolt (using the holes for the rails) a vertical piece of timber to the metal post that may give you more freedom in what rails you could use? And Just had a thought that depending on what type of rails you need, would a wire fence work? That way the vertical timber posts attached to the metal backing would work.
Dave
Yeah for sure, but I'd want to replace the M16 bolts anyway.
I'll need to sit down with a coffee on the weekend, put my thinking cap on, crunch some numbers, and figure out my preferred option.
Yes, I've already been advised that there's nothing really wrong with the plates.
It's just the logs and bolts that are the problem.
I want to keep it looking the same.
Not all the logs are that bad, and not all attachment points are the same. I'll have a think about it and price it up on the weekend.
Please keep us updated with your progress, we look forward to seeing what configuration you'll be using for your fence.
It's a spectator sport that hopefully won't turn into a comedy š
It's on hold because Bunnings is totally out of stock of treated pine posts of any kind.
I'm sorry to hear that you've run into some issues procuring pine posts.
You might want to speak to the Trade Desk or Special Orders desk at your local store as they'll be able to order some in for you.
Let me know if you want some further assistance.
There must be some supply issue because according to the web site, there are none in stock anywhere.
Would you consider sleepers?
Can you advise which size you were looking for and the general area you are in? I am happy to make some enquiries to check availability in your area.
No, they need to match the other ones (incl my neighbour's ones)
Hi, I'm afterĀ I/N:Ā 8500109,Ā Ā I/N:Ā 8500104, orĀ I/N:Ā 8500083 in the Sydney metro area. I've asked at the trades desk, and there are none of these anywhere in the Sydney metro area, and none are on order either. Seems either there's a supply issue or Bunnings isn't going to stock them any more?
HiĀ @MSSM,
Typically, our stores in the Sydney metro carry 100mm Pine logs. The 125mm and above are regionally stocked items in our more rural areas. They're most commonly used for fence posts on farms.Ā Ā I can see we have someĀ 150mm 2.4m Pole H4 Treated Pine Round Wet at Bunnings Smithfield,Ā 125mm 2.4m Pole H4 Treated Pine Round Wet at Bunnings West Gosford andĀ 125 x 125mm 2.4m Slab H4 Treated Pine Wet CCA at Bunnings Rouse Hill. They've likely ordered these to assist with a demand in that area. If you were to head to any of these stores, I would recommend you call before you travel there to ensure sufficient quantity for your needs. How many of each were you after? We can certainly ask our local supplier if we could place a Special Order for those quantities.
Only 2.
Was it two of each or two of any? Are any of those stores close enough to travel to? What is your closest store so I can inquire whether they can order the product?
- Smithfield is OK for me, as would beĀ Belambi and Kembla Grange. Rouse Hill is possible but not ideal. Gosford is too far.
- Only 2 items in total, ideally of the same type. The "125 x 125mm 2.4m Slab H4 Treated Pine Wet CCA" would be best.
Were you going to be picking these up from the store, or would you fit the 2400mm long lengths in your vehicle @MSSM? If it assists, you could have the 125 x 125mm 2.4m Slab H4 Treated Pine Wet CCA delivered directly from Rouse Hill to your home if it is too far away for you to drive there.
