D.I.Y. stencil tiled flooring

A painted stencil was used to revamp a tiled laundry floor.

The project

Using the Dulux Renovation Range floor paint, I gave our laundry floor a realistic tile look using a stencil.

Steps

Step 1

Give the tiles and grout a good clean. I used sugar soap and a microfibre cloth and also my Rubbermaid electronic cleaner. Then go in with one coat of the Dulux Renovation Range primer. Allow to dry overnight or a minimum of eight hours.

Step 2

Next up is the base colour in the Dulux Renovation Range. I applied three coats of the Vivid White. Then I painted grout lines with a paint brush, then rolled over the tiles with the small roller. I allowed each coat to dry a minimum of eight hours in between.

Step 3

Once the white was completely dry, it was time to stencil. There was a lot of trial and error when it came to stencilling. I found that taping down the stencil lightly, then rolling a thin layer of paint worked best. Too much paint caused bleeding. I applied one coat of Dulux Army Issue with the roller and then touched up wherever needed with a small artist's brush.

Step 4

Once completed, we kept off the floors for a few days just to make sure everything was completely dry and ready to use. It looks amazing. I'm so glad I gave it a go.

I'd imagine you'd need to wait for the paint to be trafficable before you replaced it in the room.We look forward to hearing all about your projects around the house and garden. @Luv2Reno thank you so much 😊 Everything needs to be taken out of the space before you tackle the project and then you still need to wait a few days after completion to pop the items back just to make sure the paint is fully dried.

Hi my tiles are 19.5cm square. Can I trim the template if needed? Do Bunnings sell the templates?

Also do you need to put a sealer over it once finished?

Let me tag @ZoeGilpin to make them aware of your questions. I'm sorry, but Bunnings only carry the Crafted Wall Shapes Stencil Book. In regards to the tile paint, it's not necessary to seal it. We'll need to wait for confirmation from Zoe if the stencil can be trimmed.

It sounds like you're planning on painting your tiles as well. Please make sure to post an update, I'm sure our members will be keen to see your efforts.

@KateWS best to find a stencil that is the same size as your tile which is what I did. The Stencil Lady is where I got mine and they have heaps of different styles & sizes 😊

Have you had any markings/peeling paint since you did the job?

@Dave-1 thank you so much! It's held up really well over a year later. The only area there are some minor scratches is in front of the washing machine which would be from dragging washing basket and because it's a pretty hight traffic area. But very minor and zero regrets doing the project!
