Does anyone have any nifty suggestions for dried herb storage for a fairly compact kitchen? I have a large array of herbs which would be great to find a way to have them easily accessible and organised.
I love drawers. Much better use of space than shelves.
We have a medium sized kitchen, however this spice rack can pretty much fit into any kitchen pantry if there is enough space.
Basically my wife wanted a good size spice rack. So we did some research and took photos of about half a dozen different types. She showed me bits and pieces of different ones that she liked.
I measured the door to find the maximum size of the rack I could mount onto the door comfortably. I had the design in my head and proceeded to build it from that.
I fitted it all together with screws, pre drilling the holes before fitting screws.
After completing the rack I then disassembled it and stained each piece of timber individually and reassembled it. I then gave it a coat of clear lacquer and fitted it to the door.
And Bob's your Uncle, One happy wife.
Great work @ralph. Many thanks for sharing.
Let me also extend a very warm welcome to the Workshop community. It's fantastic to have you join us. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your handiwork soon.
Please let me know if you need a hand to get the most from the site, or have any feedback.

Hi @Andadams, what did you end up doing for your herb and spice storage? I've been searching the internet for some creative DIY ideas to sort our herbs and spices out but i'm yet to come across anything I really like. Anyone else have any more suggestions?
Hey @aly, We still haven't yet gotten around to sorting out the spices. But we have decided on making some nice shelving to sit on out in the open (see example below). Going for some larger shelves so we can have have bigger jars/containers for spices as opposed to your supermaket tiny glass containers. Plus I feel it looks neater for on display with some simple jam jar style containers and black labels.
Thanks @ralph, we are going to take on your idea of the on display shelving, but opting for wider shelves to hold bigger spice containers. Added to our list of weekend jobs!
Sounds great @Andadams! I'm yet to decide what i'll do! I like the idea of a magnetic shelf which i've seen online a few times - perhaps i'll look into that too!
I finally got around to making that herb rack i'd previously mentioned! Here's an image of what I ended up doing. I grabbed some simple flat pack spice racks that are designed to be fixed to pantry doors. Instead I got some ply pre-cut at Bunnings and screwed the racks into the ply board so they'd be tiered three high. I haven't fixed the two boards together but simply placed them in the corner of our kitchen bench. Whilst not the most aesthetically pleasing herb rack, it's perfect for storing all of our herbs and makes them very portable. All up this project was rather easy and cost effective - very happy!
Looks great @aly. Well done. Many thanks for sharing and fantastic to see you back on Workshop. Looking forward to seeing what else you've been up to.
I saw a photo once of a thin rack on wheels (when I say thin, it would hold large jam jars) that slid in beside the fridge. I thought that would do well to hold herbs and spices as well as common ingredients or sauces that don't need to go in the fridge like flour, sugar, coffee and so on. I'd love to see photos if anybody here has made one or bought one like this!
Welcome to Workshop @yarrawarra and many thanks for joining in the discussion. Hopefully some community members will have some ideas and/or photos for you.
I also hope you get plenty of other great advice, information and inspiration from Workshop members for your projects. Feel free to post anytime you need a hand.
I have that sort of rack in an Ikea bedhead, they don't sell them anymore here.

I like that it is removable.

What are they actually lying in pls?
Sorry @Julieg9426, could you please let us know which project you are referring to?
If you hit the @ key and then type another member's name, they will be notified of your question. It's a great way to ensure you get a prompt response.
Thanks,
I think Julieg is referring to Isobel's drawer suggestion in 2016 which has a corrugated drawer liner. It looks like she may have decorated it.
Does Bunnings supply corrugated drawer liners, or a product that could be adapted for this purpose?

Yes that's exactly what I was referring to - thanks 🙂
Hi @Julieg9426,
Hopefully, @Isobel will be able to tell us more about her draw liner as I haven't seen anything like that available to purchase. It does look somewhat homemade and could be lengths of Porta 9.5mm Tasmanian Oak Dowel - 1.2m cut to size and covered with Boyle self-adhesive film to create the corrugations.

Where can you buy inserts like these please?
Hi @Diane1,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's great to have you join in the discussion. I trust you'll get loads of helpful advice and inspiring ideas from our wonderful members.
Let me tag @Isobel to see if she can assist you with where these inserts came from. I suspect they might be a D.I.Y. project. Let me also tag the ever-helpful @EricL to see how we would go about creating them.
Hello @Diane1
Thank you for sharing your question about herb storage. You can recreate this very practical storage system with some 50mm PVC pipes or cardboard tubes. If you're using PVC, you'll need to use a Multi-tool to cut the pipe. But if you're using cardboard tubes, you'll need to use a Stanley FatMax 9mm Rubber Grip Snap-off Knife. It's important to get the right tube size, so make sure to bring one of your herb bottles to test on the tube. The rule for choosing is the herb bottle must fit inside the tube. One important tip, if you choose to use cardboard make sure the walls are thick enough that they will not collapse when handled roughly.
Before going to the store, make sure to measure the interior size of your drawer so that you'll know how much pipe to get.
Here are the general steps to building your herb storage.
I've placed some images below so that you'll have an idea of how the process goes. If you have any other questions about the process, please don't hesitate to post them.
Please keep us updated with your progress, we look forward to seeing your herb storage built.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hello @shaz17
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's fantastic to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your query about herb storage.
If you'll look at my last post in this discussion, I've lined out the assembly process for the herb storage. It's actually made of PVC or cardboard tubes that have been cut precisely in half and joined together with Boyle self-adhesive film. You simply repeat the process until the drawer is full and then you can lay out your herb bottles.
If you have any questions about the process, please don't hesitate to post them.
WOW @Andadams this looks awesome, rustic.. which I love...
I'm trying to come up with some storage ideas for a coffee/ shelf / nook, too go on a wall beside my kitchen sink.
I may just do something similar to this but with deeper shelves and possibly some wrought iron....
Thank you for sharing
