How to drill a hole in granite benchtop?

Hi everyone I am putting in a new Basin and tap in my bathroom and I need to drill a hole in the granite benchtop to install a tap that will sit over the above counter Basin and the plumbers I have called said they will not do that. Is this something I can do with the right drill bit or should I get a professional?

Hi @Jane13

In view of the recent changes to the law regarding some stone benchtops, it may be they have refused for health and safety reasons, I would find out if this is the case before attempting this yourself. You don't want silicosis!

Hi @Jane13 - some good advice below. I just wanted to clarify on the point made by @R4addZ below. Engineered stone products have been recently banned in Australia due to the risks associated with working with it. Natural stone products like Granite are still OK. As a rule you should always wear PPE when cutting/drilling stone/cement products. It's always a good if you are drilling it to wet it down and keep it wet when working to minimise the dust.

Hi @MitchellMc just advising I have updated the post intro to mention that should anyone making cuts in to older engineered stone to utilise additional PPE and "M-class" workshop vacuum.
