Original paint doesn't match when patching up

Hi,

So we moved into a new property as renters about 7 years ago, we have recently vacated. I have patched up a wall where we had a shelf and painted it with the original paint that was with the house, and it has a very different look color wise. It's a low sheen water-based acrylic. Any ideas why this would be?

Thanks for sharing your question about your wall paint colour. This often happens when the wall has been exposed to dust and sunlight. The paints original tone gradually shifts and is no longer the same as the original paint. Given enough time the painted section will eventually blend into the wall as it gets exposed to the dust and sunlight. If you wish to get a colour match at the store, I suggest cutting a small section out with a craft knife about the size of a 10c coin.

Bring this colour sample to the store and the paint specialist will try to get a colour match as close as possible. Once you have the colour match in your hand, you can then paint over the section that does not match. Please remember to fill and repair the cut section where you got the sample from.

Hi @JesseS6,

I thought I'd add that it might be best to entirely paint the two walls with the original colour. As @EricL has mentioned, paints over time discolour and accumulate grime, so fresh paint will always look brighter.

Since you have the original paint, the simplest option would be to paint the walls, otherwise you're going backwards and forwards trying to match a now discoloured paint.
