How to replace shower rail?

My shower rail has come off the wall, and I have no idea how to go about choosing a replacement shower rail that will fit.

The screw seems much smaller than the hole - which is around 16mm diameter.

How did the screw secure in the first place? Was there a nut that had fallen off? How do I choose a replacement? Do I just need to seal the hole and install a new rail in a new location?

Help please!

Possibly it was a toggle style fastener - hence the larger hole and cavity.

Worth trying another in its place?

Noyade has hit the nail on the head—it’s very likely that a toggle or spring fitting was securing the rail and has now fallen into the cavity behind the wall. You could replace the fixing with a similar type, allowing you to continue using the same rail. Alternatively, you could replace the rail, though they are not likely to come with toggle or spring fittings for such a large hole; you'd need to purchase them separately. Replacing the rail with something compatible with the existing pre-drilled holes might work. However, this could be tricky, so it’s a good idea to bring the current rail to the store to ensure you find a good match.

If that proves too challenging, you can fill the existing holes with a suitable filler and install a new shower rail in a different location. Just be sure to choose fixings that suit the wall type to ensure a secure fit.
