How to re-staining my front Windsor door?

Hi there,

It looks like I need to start refreshing my front doors after 10 years. The stain is starting to flake off... I think it might be because of water that gets on the door when I wash my front deck sometimes. The stain comes off quiet easily, I can literally use my nails to scrape it off.

From my own research, it seems like I need to sand off all the current stain with maybe 160 grit sandpaper before apply 2 coats of an exterior varnish stain? Does that sound about right? Hoping someone could confirm before I go and buy the tools I need to do the job!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about re-staining your door.

The steps you've outlined are correct, it will need to be sanded down in order for your new stain to be properly absorbed by the timber door. I recommend investing in a detail sander which will allow you to get into the tight corners of the door. My best advice is to check the weather before you begin to make sure you'll have several days of sun. The last thing you want to happen is to get the fresh stain wet.
