How to update side access?

good morning, I’m seeking some advice on how to update the side access to my house. I would like to make use of the old concrete path with maybe some pavers over it. I will also be removing the old fence. Suggestions and ideas would be great, I’m looking at completing this job as a DIY project.

It looks like you’ve got a fantastic space to work with, and updating the side access can really enhance both the functionality and look of your home. Since you’re keeping the existing concrete path, adding pavers over it is a great idea. You could use large-format pavers for a modern, clean look, or go for textured stone pavers to add character. To break up the hard surface, consider leaving narrow gaps between the pavers filled with decorative pebbles or hardy ground covers like creeping thyme.

With the old fence being replaced, you’ve got an opportunity to really transform the space. Installing a modern decorative panels can brighten and add interest to the area. Hanging pots can soften the fence and give you space for herbs or small plants without taking up floor space.

If you trim back the trees, you’ll open up more sunlight, making this area perfect for raised corrugated garden beds. You could grow vegetables, herbs, or even dwarf fruit trees, making the most of the space’s productivity. Alternatively, if you prefer a low-maintenance option, consider creating a simple garden with native plants, gravel mulch, and feature pots to add greenery without much upkeep.

Another option is to turn it into a cosy retreat. A small bistro set with outdoor chairs and a table could create the perfect spot for a morning coffee. Add some festoon lights or solar path lights along the fence for a welcoming glow in the evenings. If the area is wide enough, you could even include built-in bench seating with storage underneath for garden tools or outdoor cushions.

Don’t forget to think about practicalities like drainage. If the concrete path has poor runoff, you might want to install a strip drain along one edge or ensure the pavers are slightly sloped to direct water away from the house.
