What angle bracket for window awning?

Hi there,

I'm considering a DIY window awning idea for a couple of my windows, 1800 mm wide 1400 mm drop. x2 triangle shaped frame on each

side supporting lightweight roof material such as pc sheet. I'd use treated plywood for the frame.

Each frame will have 3 arms, one attached to the brick wall, other 2 arms ([peripheral arms) attached to the arm attached to the brick wall. The angle would be 30 deg to protect the window from weather. Is there any metal angle bracket that I can buy to attach two peripheral arms to the one attached to the wall? I'd need 3 angle bracket for each frame. A couple of sample pictures attached. I'm open to suggestions/alternative options. Thanks in advance.

I made a rather amateur one from saw-ripped pallet hardwood and mini-corrugate off-cuts - more of an experiment really. I wasn't sure what angle would be best (this was privacy orientated) so I hinged the top so I could play around with what worked best. Once that was determined - I applied the two wooden supports.

It's all one unit - ie ; a frame that is held in place by four screws.

Working well - so I should paint it - one day.

Just to clarify, it seems like you're asking for metal angle brackets to attach the two peripheral arms (the ones extending from the wall) to the arm that’s mounted on the wall, correct? From your description and the pictures, though, it seems like the arms that extend outward are typically cut at an angle to meet the mounting timber plate, and would usually be fixed with screws rather than using angle brackets.

Could you confirm whether you're looking for brackets to reinforce the joints between the arms, or if you're referring to a different part of the structure? I'd love to help you find the right materials once I have a clearer idea of your design and the specific joints you're working with.

clever @Noyade. I was wondering about the right angle for weather protection. My window is west facing. By 15 deg, do you mean the angle between the wall and top frame (timber piece)?

Also if you don't mind uploading another image showing how you fixed those arms with screws, that would be great.

Hi @MitchellMc thank you so much for your reply. I knew those arms were attached to each other by screws, i was wondering from which side to insert the screws (rear vs front) as you mentioned arms extending outwards will be cut at an angle. Hence I was going down the reinforcement bracket route. I couldn't find any angle brackets on Bunnings site long enough for that job :(.

The pics that you shared, would you be able to draw some screws and the direction/orientation of those screws in terms of how they'd go in so I can visualise please?

Hi @rahad,

If you can build the structure on the ground before mounting, the screws can be installed from the rear of it. However, if you're going to be building it on the wall, the screw would need to go diagonally through the arms into the uprights. It would be best to drive screws from both sides, construct the frame on the ground and then have a friend help lift it into position.

Sure @rahad.

The angle did turn out to be 30 degrees. As this was an experimental small window prototype and being hinged at the top - it doesn't take much to support the corrugated section.
