How to mount wall cabinets with no side gaps?

Hi!

I'm planning to hang wall cabinets in the toilets to store TP and I think it would look best if they span the full width of the wall.

How can I do this to achieve a finish with no gaps at the left and right side of the cabinets?

Is it by method of installation or will I require some kind of additional materials to fill/cover the gaps regardless of installation method?

To help point you in the right direction, could you let us know how wide the cabinet is and how wide the wall space is?

If the cabinet isn’t exactly the same width as the wall, then yes, you generally need to install filler panels on one or both sides to cover any gaps and achieve the built-in look you’re after. Even if the cabinet is a pretty close fit, you’ll often still want a small filler to help account for any unevenness in the walls and to give you a bit of adjustment room when mounting everything neatly.

The cabinets haven't been purchased yet, I want to understand how they'll be installed to achieve the desired finish or what limitations I'll have before I have cabinets custom made to size.

One of the walls is 850mm, though.

Typically you screw through the back of the cabinet into the timber wall studs @misstcameron. There are no particular limitations, although it's essential to verify whether there are sufficient studs in the area to secure the fixings. A stud finder is helpful for this.

Ah I'm working with a brick wall (I'm in Perth).

But how to install on the surface wasn't the question, it's how do I achieve a fit that is snug with the walls on both the left and right side.

Or, is it best practice to have the cabinets made a few cm narrower than the wall space (850mm in this case) so that some kind of commonly used gap filler or cover can be used (such as some kind of strip), which makes the cabinets look like they span the width of the wall space for a clean, gapless finish 🙂

Brick wall is a similar process @misstcameron, you just use masonry fixings instead of screws.

I'm sorry, but I'm not entirely sure I understand your question correctly. As mentioned above, filler panels are used on either side of a cabinet that doesn't cover a full span between walls. If you were having a customer cabinet made and your walls are square, then you'd have it made at a few millimetres less than your 850mm width. The cabinet would then fit perfectly. Some caulking filler would cover the tiny gap.

If, for some reason, you had a custom-made cabinet created that was less than 850mm, say 700mm, you would install a 75mm filler panel on each side of it, so it's snug. I've created a rendering below to illustrate.

Is this the sort of look you're trying to avoid @misstcameron ?

My excuse is I made it (1.8 metres long) and could not get it onto the wall (it just holds towels) without a gap to compensate for the 'diagonal' length.
