How to support my fence?

Hi All,

My fence had a bulge at the bottom and I talked to my neighbour about it. Apparently the landscaping pebbles were pushing against it over the years, resulting in the bulge. Refer to the first picture.

My neighbour then removed the pebbles on his end and we managed to push the bottom part into place (somewhat). Refer to the second picture

My question is - how do I provide additional support to the fence to prevent future bulging? I am quite a newbie, so any advice/links to items to purchase is much appreciated.

Thanks for sharing your question about your fence. I suggest using Jack 60cm Ultrapost Premium Steel Fence Post - 5 Pack spaced evenly along the length of timber. If driven deep enough this should provide adequate support to the board to prevent it from bulging out again.

Are the stones higher on the other side of the fence? I suspect that they are to push out the base like that. I like @EricL 's solution with the Steel posts tho you will be able to see some of it even if driven in all the way. The stones/grave;/soil should be at the same level either side of the fence otherwise even with the added posts the fence will want to bow out. We all use fences as a bit of a retaining wall 🙂 But really we shouldnt.

Man! Love, absolutly love the outside the box thinking for showing something 🙂 You have a way steadier hand then I do!.

I use "snipping tool" to capture part of the screen, from the start button win 10 and then use the highlighter or pen to etch the screenshot and save it as whatever. I prefer your way 🙂

@Noyade has a great easy solution definitely worth considering, especially as plinth board is only 120mm x 19mmm thick treated pine and is not supposed to retain anything.

My preference would be to head back over to the neighbour and get him to pull all the stones back off the fence line. Then remove the stones from your side and dig the soil out enough to accomodate 50mm or 75mm thick sleepers long enough to reach and be cut to length so they can be secured to the fence posts using suitably length bugle/batten screws. Then the stones can be replaced and there will be no future issue with bulging and will last a lot longer than the plinth with stones mixed with soil resting against it.
