Wall panelling on TV wall

Hi all, seeking some thoughts/advice on a feature wall I'm planning.

In my FIFA Room (AKA Theatre) I'm doing panelling on the TV wall. I'm trying to decide if I do horizontal or vertical panelling...

Will horizontal compliment the width of the TV? Or will vertical look better? I have an 85inch TV and the wall is about 4m wide including a 1m doorway so the TV gets centred in roughly 3m section.

I've recently done horizontal shiplap in my entry (unfinished area so ignore the random placement of plants).

My vote for what it is worth is horizontal.

Thanks for your input gents @Brad @Jason. Still keen on other people's thoughts. I love the look of the vertical batten cladding (about 25-30mm width) but feel it'll take the focus of the TV, even be a bit distracting, so will save it for a different area.

I'm thinking about the colour I paint it too now. I love the Dulux Domino which I used in the Entry but don't want to double up and I'm thinking a really deep, dark green could be the go. I have a French Oak TV unit with black and dark grey accents, a dark grey couch with timber feet along with dark brown leather cushions and pouf, white walls and ceiling and of course any beloved polished concrete floor. I'll also have a set of cacti in the corner. It's a very earthy, raw, masculine look/feel I'm going for.

Suggestions on the best green? Or any other colours I should consider?

I vote horizontal. My colour choice gun metal grey.

Just my two cents (as I am CAD drawing my home theater design as well!) but horizontal will always look better due to the inherent 'width' 16:9 of a TV screen...vertical would clash. Then again that is design - contrast can be used extremely effectively - but just IMHO KISS works and go horizontal!

Depending on your setup remember those cables mate...I have a Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 system going in and with just with a computer, PS4 and Foxtel (of course amplifier, but dont forget power boards, Ethernet cables/splitters, transformers etc) I have HAD to go with a false wall rear to hide them all.

I'll be honest and say that I was OCD enough to do a spreadsheet up and count all the cabling up. That was when I started to panic! Just IMHO anyway, good luck man 🙂

EDIT ps: before it gets jumped on by a grammar/spelling Nazi; I am aware of my spelling of 'theater' and the fact that it is incorrect (in this country; Australia). I override the spell check in homage to my favourite band 🙂 peace

I have my conduit set into my brick wall (new home) so nothing to worry about there except when the head/end of a cord is too big for the condut haha.

@ProjectPete Whoa...conduit chased into the wall is going to the next level...nice commitment to a quality finished product mate 😀 I guess I managed to get lucky with my home theater placement; the other side of the single brick wall the TV and gear will be on is the inside of the Bed 2 wardrobe *thumbsup* neat little poke through the wall and run a conduit up (hidden inside the wardrobe) to the roof cavity for the ceiling and rear speakers 😉 just personally chasing conduit into a wall is too much...kudos to you for committing to that kind of an install though mate 🙂

I don't even want to think about the number of times I have had 'x' number of cables perfectly running through a specific opening...only to realise there was a power cord I'd forgotten! I don't know about anyone else but it always seems to be a power cord (with the big plug that is tenths of a mm too big for the hole...of course...) that has taken a couple of years off my life 😂

I currently keep changing my mind with my design (it seems to be a relentless loop of trying to incorporate some appealing aesthetics without compromising the function of the home theater itself...I have a dozen CAD efforts that haven't cut it) so I'd love to see any pic's or sketches or whatever as you work through it mate 🙂

Firstly I would definitely go with the horizontal paneling..It will have the effect of stretching your horizontal axis to a more cinemascope aspect ( 2.35:1 )..
And secondly, use the same grey paint that is on your existing paneling...Grey is the ideal colour background because it's a neutral colour..
BTW..Who makes an 85" TV.? That's HUGE!!!

I was thinking last night of using the same Dulux Domino I use din my entry coz I love it and it's perfect for theatre room, was just trying to mix it up a bit. Also considered Dulux Oolong which isn't as dark and looks like it has a blue tone in its grey (to my eyes anyway).

Would you believe many decades ago I had the first widescreen TV in South Australia..

I know this because it was imported from Philips in Holland and widescreen TV's hadn't even hit Australia at that time..

It also cost $6000.00 and it was a whole 32".!!! 😀😀 Man..how things have changed !!🤤

G'day @ProjectPete exciting project ahead.

I think going vertically will take away the point of having a widescreen tv. Vertical panels will just narrow your veiw to the ceiling and floor and give the appearance that the tv is not as wide.

Going horizontal will just enhance the room Style I believe and make your tv look like the widescreen tv it's intended too.

Definitely horizontal. If you're on Instagram, look up #modern farmhouse - there is a swag of pictures show how effective this type of paneling is. I'm planning to do my whole house this way!

G’day, I’m also thinking horizontal panelling asitwould go along the longer lines of your telly. Personally, I think vertical panels would make your telly look smaller than it is and create distraction. For the colour, go with a dark-dark colour that works with your furniture. Good luck, and can’t wait to see the finished product!

That is a nice TV @ProjectPete mate...I went the OLED path myself but have seen a couple of QLED's around and have been impressed! 😀 at 82" I'm sure the image will be very clear 😄

I like colours your thinking of as well! Everything all just IMHO of course - and my apologies as whilst 'paint it this colour' would me much easier I am going through this all myself...with unique circumstances! I have the privilege (?) of being a B Eng (Civil) and having a mother who is a very talented designer; so my renovations are 2% construction, 8% design, and 90% argument 😉 regardless hopefully I can proffer something that is helpful!

Due to being a retired bachelor the home theater is where I spend a lot of my inside home time; so I have chosen to go with Dulux Tinker 300%. I have a Swedish places rug and massive couch (deep ocean blue and a dark grey blue respectively) and all audio visual equipment is black so I felt that if I wasn't careful everything could get dark REALLY quickly. There is very little natural light available as well (large window facing a wall). Just something to consider...in my specific circumstances it is a 'frequented' living area. If it wasn't then I think you could safely go darker without creating that oppressive and uninviting 'dungeon' feeling...just IMHO again but I feel a lot of home theaters suffer from that and I personally just don't find it comfortable...everyone is different though!

One thing that may help is 'paint boards'. I'm not sure if everyone does this anyway (Engineer...this is not my field!) but mum would constantly feed me 900x600 3mm MDF boards with differing colours painted on them (all Dulux). At one point I seriously had a dozen or more lined up against the wall in my living room! For a design noob like myself it was invaluable...I just can't see things like an experienced designer can...and they can't build the funky junk they come up with so it works out even 😂

First off...is the ‘shiplap’ a board or individual timbers...& from bunnings? Second...if yes is it available Australia wide? I’ve asked in my local here in WA and they don’t know what I’m talking about.

I cannot find it anywhere. Generally ‘shiplap’ is a wider board, and used horizontally.

I’d also use it horizontally. 🙂

Nice to e-meet you @Miss-pink. The shiplap lining boards are individual and can be installed any direction you like. They're also readily available everywhere. This is them - https://www.bunnings.com.au/truchoice-white-primed-fj-pine-lining-board-133-x-13mm-5400mm_p0021325 - (somewhat) interestingly, they're known as shiplap and are called shiplap on the invoice, but the website doesn't use the word 'shiplap' in its title, only the description so it doesn't appear in search results when you search 'shiplap'. @Jason you should feed back to the digi team to edit the title and or search metadata 🙂

Thanks for reply. I’m used to watching USA flipping shows where the shiplap is wider than what is here. I love the bit wider look, but if that’s all I can get in OZ..then I’ll use that. I want to do a distressed feature wall in my bedroom with it.

And yes the entire bunnings site could be fixed. It’s so hard to find anything unless you use specific words, that have been entered. Bunnings staff all agree too. Frustrates them looking for things 🙂

I saw this at the time (about the shiplap nomenclature issue) and I meant to comment; but I have been busy since then. Anyway I just wanted to put some kudos towards the 'digital team' @Jason ...I noticed they had actioned that within the day! Very impressive to see that they care what a few people talk about here.

Also just a thanks to @Isobel and @ProjectPete for the easy VJ wall panelling concept...I am still struggling with a design (for my home theater) and whilst I don't think this would suit; it is still another concept that I like and could possibly use elsewhere in my house 😉

Those VJ panels look the goods. The Bunnings website gives advice on how to affix them to stud walls. Whilst that works for everyone on the East coast with brick veneer, for us over here in WA most of the housing is double brick. What’s the solution here then. Is it liquid nails and masonry nails?

Stud walls definitely easier for this sort of project @ScottNoIdea

But yes, for our brick walls on the WC, I rely on Selleys/Sika instant liquid nails plus masonry nails and give the panels a good tap all over with a rubber mallet to help with the flat adhesion to the wall. Knock the nails in further with a minimum 5mm nail punch and follow this up with a quick patch and sand before painting.

And which panelling? The horizontal dark one is Dulux Domino done with shiplap cladding. The vertical is EasyVJ panels but Id have to find out about the colour for you.

Cheers for that @ProjectPete...masonry nails I have also never used before and a rubber mallet tap to ensure all the surfaces are adhered is a great suggestion...little tips like that are golden mate 😉
