How to use router to create picture frame?

I am working on a picture frame which requires a groove in the middle to attach strip lights. I have looked at the bunnings ozito router table and router to do this job. Looks fairly easy to cut the groove with the right tools. Is there anyone who has one of these machines that would be able to show me how to do this before I go out and purchase one. I am located in Melbourne.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @shev. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about using a router table.

It might be a bit unlikely to find a member nearby with an Ozito router and table setup—and a suitable bit on hand—who can demonstrate in person. However, some of our members who are keen on woodworking might be able to offer tips and advice on how to create a groove using a router table. Let me mention @woodenwookie, @r23on, @Dave-1 and @Nailbag to see if they have any thoughts.

In general, you’d use a straight-cut bit sized to match the width of the groove you need. After fitting the bit, adjust the height so it cuts to your desired depth. Then, set up a fence on the router table to guide your timber and keep the cut straight. Carefully feed the timber along the fence and across the spinning bit, keeping consistent pressure to ensure an even groove. If you have a test piece of timber, it’s a good idea to practice first.

Sadly I dont have a router... 🙂 Tho that dosnt stop me, Bunnings have heaps of Timber mouldings and thats how I have worked around the issue of using a router sometimes, I will form a relief by using the trim as standoffs. Or have a chennel but raising two seperate sides/pieces.

Do you have a picture of the frame with the lights you want?

Potentially you could clamp a level across the frame and using a circular saw with set depths cut multiple lines across 1mm apart and then using a chisel to removethe wastage. Depends on the material you are using and how thick it is? Timber, particle board type deal.

Hi @shev

Unless you think you might use that router setup again, I would be inclined to contact a local mens-shed. One of the guys there would be able to make the groove for you.

Otherwise to give you some direction and if you actually need a table for the router, it would help if you could send through a sketch of the profile you're after and any other supporting images.

Good evening @shev. What wood are you using? Dave's suggestion above with the mouldings is a very good idea. But with just a router you can perform some magic. This a picture frame from a skirting board passed through a router with various shaped bits and a router table will make it even easier. Both products (router and table) are very inexpensive these days.

Hi Shev

I would follow up with the local men’s shed as they will have a router table very much set up for any operation. if you can let me know what part of Melb you are in I can let you know where the local shed is. As a rule most sheds will do the task at no cost and the job will be done correctly. Ideally the grove should be done before cutting the material to size for the frame.
