How to haul logs up a steep driveway?

Hi Team, I’m looking to drag/roll a felled tree log up a steep driveway without damaging the asphalt, using a Ute. Is there a specific way you’d tackle it? I was thinking chains through eyebolts in the sides of the log, on a swivel, so it rolls rather than skids? Cheers, Jim

To make the job easier to picture and suggest some options, do you have a few photos of the driveway and tree sections?

ATM I am think something like a skid nose, but smooth, with something wide at the rear so you wont get drag marks on the driveway but without knowing the angle of the driveway Im not coming up with something I would be game to try.

Similar to @Dave-1 I am hesitant to suggest a solution without seeing both the log and the asphalt.

You might be able to use a long lever, such as a fencing bar, to get the log onto something like a sled and then tow the sled up the driveway.

I'd have to see what we're working with, however, to be confident in a design.

I look forward to further details. This sounds like a fun problem to brainstorm ideas for.

Thanks Dave and Jacob, I’ve attached some photos; the red line on the log marks where it will be cut, I.e. I’m not moving the whole thing in one go. Appreciate your thoughts!

It's a bit like the Great Escape movie, but you dig a little hole under the log and then with a 'pry' bar (patent pending) like this, lever it to a height (300mm in this case) to fit a wheeled dolly (as per @JacobZ).

Or, with timber and jacks - elevate it to a box trailer height.

Anybody around to help you?

A simple dolly with a steel or wood axle and maybe brackets of sorts that you can screw into the log for stability.

And away you go.

Thats a decent sized log, smaller would be easier to manage but the other looks longer 🙂

A ) Easyroll 450kg 700 x 500mm Xcalibur Dolly $119

B ) Easyroll 350kg Heavy Duty P Handle Hand Trolley $139

C ) Easyroll 250kg 750 x 380mm Heavy Duty Moving Dolly $149

Depending on how long the log is I am thinking of option B or C,

- With option B You could really just place the trolley in the middle, roll the log onto the foot and tilt, Tie to the towbar of you car and slowly wheel it up. (both the short and maybe the long with someone else to walk with it.)

- Option C I like as well. Lie it on its side next to the mid point, then ratchet strap in two seperate places to the metal frame and log. Roll the dolly upright, maybe using the tobar, then wheel it up the driveway.

With either trolley you will have the trolley as a extra you get to keep and use later. Main thing they are least likely to damage your driveway which was the thing I was aiming for.

Trolling through looking at items that could be used in other ways I came back to Easyroll 350kg Heavy Duty P Handle Hand Trolley (there is also a cheaper version at 300kg for $89 but mmmmmm)

So using that last 350kg Easyroll, strap the log (even before you cut it but possibly maxing it out weight wise) so the trolley is on the side with the L foot against the far end of the log. Roll it over so the log is sitting on the trolley (wheels flat on the ground) with the log longer then the trolley, Tie the log off to the tow bar and then tow it up the hill slowly. It should follow along nicely. I have moved bookcases this way without tying down where the weight of the item even tho taller then the trolley, locks it in position.

If you could take a guess, how heavy do you think that log is?

If you can give us a length and a diameter, I could estimate it.

This Rhino Cart Dolly All Terrain Mover RC-1P-AR-RBR, being capable of supporting 907kg, would be worth looking into.
