Whats the best tool for removing sewer caps?

Hello

What would you suggest would be the best tool to get sewer clean-out cap opened? (4 inch)

I noticed there are some wide head wrenches with a head size of 50mm. The cap is 51mm. Do you think it'll work with a 1mm difference?

Are there any other tools which are good for removing these caps say?

Hi @Eddy222,

You could use a Trojan 250 mm Adjustable Wide Mouth Wrench. While they’re listed as opening up to 50 mm, in practice, they will likely fit a 51 mm cap. You might just need to encourage it into position with a light tap from a hammer. It’s a good, sturdy option and should give you the grip you need without damaging the cap.

The only other real option would be a rubber strap wrench, though it might not have the torque required to loosen the cap if it’s on tightly.

Hello!

Thanks for your quick response. Do you think trojan 250mm wide mouth wrench can also open the two caps on the pipes in the picture below? Or would it slip as it's more of a circular cap?

Is there a special type of wrench or pliers suitable for opening these caps?? I don't hv the dimension/brand of the caps, but the pipes would hv been put in during the late 80's.

It might catch on the ridges @Eddy222, but for those caps, you're likely best off with the strap wrench.

Regards the top image - I swear on a stack of bibles the wrench on the right was called a PVC nut wrench when I bought it.

But the similar one on the left, much bigger, looks very old - before PVC?
