Making a Stanley Planer handle

It never had a handle when I inherited it.

Stanley Bailey No. 4 1/2.

So I'm having a go making one outta wood.

Now, have a look at this photo...

Note the threaded rods. I'm convinced the threaded ends started with a larger diameter?

Or is it my eyes?

I tried adding extra thread to mine - but the die (1/4NC20) - just 'falls', once past the thread.

If that makes sense.

The rod is in poor condition.

It does look bigger on closer inspection; I suppose the only way to find out is to order the kit and test it.

No, I can't afford at present that $80 kit above.

The plan was - make the wooden handle - then cut a thread on a rod length of my choice - to fit the handle.

But nothing is working. I've tried a few other imperial dies.

Made in England (1960's?) - it couldn't possibly be - metric?

Could it?

I suggest bringing the tool to the store and checking out the threaded rods and see if any of them accidentally fit. Another option would be to see if any of the 150mm bolts in the nut and bolt aisle will work with your tool.

I had a look around at Bunnings - no luck.

So I just compromised. Using the original threaded rod (cleaned up) - I created a 'ledge' in the drilled channel with a forester bit, positioned a tight washer, then the original nut.

The nut is slightly exposed but doesn't interfere with the workings.

I'm on a roll. I just now finished another handle - for a Carter No.7 Try Plane. This just uses a long bolt for the main handle, so I managed to get a better estimate for the handle height this time.

The handles I'm making are far thicker than the originals (20mm) - but if I make them thinner I think they will split with use. Presently they're 30mm.
