How to build a fence extension above a Colorbond fence?

I’m looking to build something like the fence extension in the photo (slatted panels above a Colorbond fence) for extra privacy. I’ve seen similar panels at Bunnings but I’m not sure what I’d actually need to buy or the best way to put it all together.

A few questions:

• What exact materials do I need from Bunnings to build this? (slat kits, posts, brackets, screws, etc.)
• Is it better to attach extensions directly to the fence or install freestanding posts just behind it?
• If freestanding, what’s the best way to secure the posts to the ground — concrete footings, base plates, or something else?
• For low maintenance and longevity, would aluminium or timber be better?
• Any tips for installation if I don’t have much DIY experience?

Any advice or step-by-step guidance would be really appreciated!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about extending your fence.

You do have a few choices in regards to fence extensions, but it all depends on the type of fence that you have. For example, if you have a Colorbond fence it's possible to extend it using the same materials as show in these discussions: Fence extension for extra privacy by @Shannon and How to add an extension to a Colorbond fence by @ProjectPete. 

If you have a timber fence, it might be possible to install a Matrix fence extension as seen in this guide - MATRIX Fence Extension. 

However, in regards to your questions the materials you'll need will be the following:

• ProtectorAl 50 x 50 x 2400mm Surfmist Aluminium Pool and Garden In-Ground Post with Cap (can be ordered to your preferred colour)
   
• Matrix 1800 x 430mm Charcoal Slat Extension Fence (if you are after that slat look design, there are a variety of choices available)
   
• Self-tapping steel screws

Is it better to attach extensions directly to the fence or install freestanding posts just behind it? It's more cost effective to attach the extension to the existing fence. A self-standing fence will need to be dug into the ground, and a concrete foundation poured in. For low maintenance an aluminium post would last much longer, and it does not need to be sanded or painted annually.
