Simple and stylish mosaic coasters made using tiles glued to timber off-cuts with pre-mixed grout and sealed with wax.
The project
A simple way to create some beautiful mosaic coasters or centrepieces for your table. Either by refinishing existing pieces or creating your own from scratch.
Steps
Step 1
Firstly, find yourself a base for the coasters. I had some old timber coasters that I wanted to refinish but you could use some off-cuts of timber also. I also had a larger timber lid to a candle that I wanted to add tiles to. Lightly scuff-sand the surface to remove any debris and to roughen the surface, which will aid the adhesion of the tiles.
Step 2
Then plan out the area to be tiled. You might need to trim some edges to fit the base. I used these white penny rounds and I cut some of them to fit the larger round base.
Step 3
Then you can apply the tile adhesive. I like to use this premixed adhesive which is great for smaller projects. I used this adhesive spreader to apply a thin layer. I then laid the tiles and pressed firmly. Then removed any excess using a damp sponge. Leave this to set for at least 24 hours.
Step 4
You can now add the grout. Again I like to use this premixed grout when doing small projects. It has a thin nozzle which makes application into all the gaps very efficient. I added the grout around the edges of the timber as I didn’t want the timber visible. I then used the damp sponge to press and smooth the grout evenly. Then it’s time to set for another 24 hours.
Step 5
Once it’s set, you can wipe any residue with a clean damp sponge. I sealed this using a white wax which gives the grout a nice smooth finish and also makes cleaning a lot easier.
Step 6
I love how these turned out. There are so many possibilities with this. You can use any type of mosaic tiles and get really creative with the designs.
