How to fix gap between brick wall and roof?

Hi all,

I'm looking for advice on a solution that will reduce dust into an external garage/workshop.

It gets extremely dusty when the wind picks up slightly. I’ve done some reading so far and am thinking a breathable barrier of some description could be good and a relatively easy install but happy to hear other suggestions.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

We had a very similar situation at my parents' place, where under the house was bricked in with Besser blocks that left a slight gap beneath the floor joists of the second level. This gap would allow things like dust and bugs to fly through the gap, which wasn't ideal.

Our solution was to attach some very fine flyscreen, such as this Cyclone 910mm x 6m Miniweave Flyscreen, to cover the gap. We used staples to fix the flyscreen in place, then nailed some 42 x 18mm H3 Mouldings over the staples, shot them in place with finish nails, then filled the nail holes and painted the mouldings.

This was a relatively simple solution that did a great job keeping things out, while still allowing airflow in what is a fairly stuffy area. You might be able to use something like this on the lower ends of your roof.

The gable, which is shown in the third image, where the gap is between the rafters and the roof tiles, could be a bit trickier because there isn't a great way to fix something to the side of the tiles. It's not a perfect solution, but you might be able to plug the gap with some foam infills.

For this side of the house, you may have to look at solutions from the inside. Is there any access to the roof from the inside? If so, could we maybe grab some photos?

I would fill the gap in the end row of ridge tiles with Mortar.

Then for the top of the wall gap, I would highly recommend installing a facia board and guttering and return the underside of the facia with cement sheet.

Long term rainwater falling at the footings of the brick wall has a very high potential to cause serious structural damage. I recently worked on a house that had a garage with an entire wall that had cracked and dropped due to gutters that had rusted away and never replaced. The wall was a knock down.

I just built up a wood barrier as close as I could to the iron.

Just glued.

Hi @DylanJP i agree with Al the comments, you need to seal all the gaps to prevent dust getting in.

if you don’t want cement the roof tiles , you could try cutting insulation or foam rubber and fill the gaps, this will reduce some of the dust, but looking at the roof tiles, there seems to be a lot of gaps in the tiles too, if the ceilings in the the aren’t insulated, it might to a good idea to install insulation bats in the ceiling , at least this will prevent dust getting into the room, plus you get an insulated house too.
