How to build a frame for climbing plants to keep them off the fence?

I'd like to build a frame for some climbers to hide my fence, but without adding weight that will eventually pull the fence down. My other option is to plant some trees but, as the yard is quite narrow, I'd like to keep the foliage as narrow as possible. I also don't want to lose the sunlight that comes in through the living room windows. So, nothing too high.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

If you are looking to avoid adding weight to the fence then the best option is to have your frame separate from the fence.

There are premade options such as this Jack Tube Trellis 2.06m x 1m or this Jack 1900 x 600mm Grip And Grow Rustic Freestanding Plant Trainer, which are simply driven into the soil before planting. They are likely good options in your situation.

Another option is to use lattices such as these Lattice Makers 1800 x 600mm Diagonal Framed Lattice Panel and support them with Jack 240cm Black Premium Ultraposts. You'd simply drive the ultraposts 600mm into the soil, then screw the lattice to them.

Either option would work without adding weight to the fence.

Thanks Jacob,

The ultrapost with wire option seems like the most appropriate option for my space. There's quite a few meterage of fence and I wanted something as minimal as possible.

Hi @MelO1,

That's not exactly what I was thinking, but it sounds like a perfect solution considering you want something minimal.

You could do something like @Gwandalan_Tales' project Star Jasmine fence screening using wire or @royq's Training climbers to screen a fence, but instead of attaching it to the fence, you attach it to the ultraposts.

I'm excited to see what you come up with.
