How to fix sliding bolt lock?

So, I need a solution to my dilemma

I have installed one part of the lock, I drilled a hole for the latch thing to go into. However the lock isn't long enough to go into the hole. So when you've "locked it" the door will still be open.

What do you suggest I use to fix it?

I know I've done a terrible job! Please don't judge!!!

Hello @vivarose

I propose getting a piece of timber about 60mm long, 25mmwide and 10mm thick and placing it in front of the lock. The piece of wood will need to be glued and screwed next to the door frame and into the wall for a firm installation. I suggest using Selleys liquid nails to attach it to the wall. Once it is in place you can then drill a hole into it for the bolt on the door to slide through. This will prevent the door from opening. The timber patch can be painted over so that it matches the colour of your wall.

I am wondering if the workshop lads can find one like that with a long throw bolt.

Hi @vivarose,

Did your kit come with another portion as per the image below? If so, you might have enough room to screw it to the timber (?) trim between the door and the wall. This captures the end of the bolt.

However, the simpler solution, as @AlanM52 mentioned, is to install a Delf Trade 9.5 x 150mm Satin Chrome Extended-Throw Barrel Bolt.

🙂 No judgement here ever. If you could see the questions I have asked and the maybe obvious things I have done 🙂 yeah, we all learn from our questions. Def agree with @Noyade

I wonder of you used a saw blade or a hacksaw blade and cut a notch out of the timber trim then used a chisel gently to remove that notch. You would end up with a flat area to install the end of the sliding bolt?

I have used a junior hacksaw to do trim work Craftright 150mm Junior Hacksaw With 5 Blades

I can assure you that there is nothing wrong with what you have done so far. You simply have bought the wrong barrel bolt.

All you need to do now is swap it out with one of the long-throw types that @AlanM52 and @MitchellMc have suggested being Delf Trade 9.5 x 150mm Satin Chrome Extended-Throw Barrel Bolt These are available in a range of colours, though pricing is similar. The screw holes of the replacement will cover the ones from the current one.

There will be no need to try and install the retainer (picture below) unless you really want to. The job becomes complicated and I don't believe the finish will be as neat with it. There is enough depth in the bolt to be secure in the hole you have already made in the architrave. Though it may need to be enlarged or deeper to suit the new one.
