The great Australian backyard is a special place for entertaining family and friends and pottering around the garden.
Our first search for Australia’s best backyards saw Bunnings Workshop members sharing many wonderful projects to add to our collection of backyard inspiration for your home.
It was challenging for our judges to pick winners, but they have been announced today in the latest issue of the Bunnings magazine.
Congratulations to the following winners and thanks to everyone that has taken the time and effort to share their handiwork with the community. We love your work.
Best landscaping project
Complete backyard landscaping project by @WelcomeHome
Starting with just a sloping bare lawn, this comprehensive backyard landscaping project created a vibrant, bird-friendly oasis including a mix of native, evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs plus decking, arbour, water feature, paving and outdoor shower. Fantastic work by first home buyer Alison from Tasmania.
Best lawn project
Lawn irrigation using Pope pop-up sprinklers by @RenoMike
A new garden irrigation system with Pope pop-up sprinklers was installed to water newly installed Sir Walter Buffalo turf as part of a complete frontyard landscaping project with new retaining wall. It was a first-time landscaping project by Michael from Victoria with all materials sourced from Bunnings during the three-to-four months.
Best D.I.Y. garden feature
Fish pond and water feature by @JoTM
A pond liner, sand, pebbles, water plants and pavers were used to create a pond, water feature and garden paving by South Australian member and pond newcomer Joanne. Jo’s top tip is to “be prepared for lots of hard work… and maybe consider hiring an excavator!” Jo now gets to sit back and see local wildlife enjoying her tranquil creation.
Best outdoor entertaining area
Covered deck and outdoor kitchen by @tobyandtamsyn
An outdoor entertaining area featuring a covered composite deck, outdoor kitchen with barbecue, fridge and an electric fireplace. Victorians Toby and Tamsyn completed the project by working weekends over two months, wanting to ensure it was a low-maintenance space. “A plan for your vision is a must,” Toby said. “With a bit of forward planning we were able to achieve more than we thought possible.”
Best edible garden project
Backyard makeover with paving and fruit trees by @Jimfish
Raised garden beds, fence extensions and paving was installed before fruit trees and vegetables were planted to create a productive garden by South Australian keen gardener and grandfather James. His family can now enjoy fresh produce from plum, peach, apricot, lemon and mandarin trees as well as his vegetable plot.
Best small space project
Paved outdoor entertaining area with arbor by @jordanandrea
A neglected lawn in a narrow backyard was transformed into a paved outdoor entertaining area using recycled bricks with a metal arbor. Handy couple Andrea and Jordan from Victoria wanted to create something both beautiful and functional in a relatively narrow space with a modest budget. “The mix of plants has proven to be low maintenance and also a magnet for birds, bees and butterflies who visit daily, which our daughter loves,” says Andrea.
