How to fix sliding door?

Hello everyone,

I have a sliding door to my backyard and one the rollers/wheels got broken. The wheel simply stuck inside of the door frame which causes the door to scratch against the tracks.

The last photo shows that the wheel is hardly visible, I can use a screwdriver to get the wheel out. It appears that there is a spring inside which is supposed to push the wheel out but it is broken.

Does Bunnings sells suitable rollers/wheels for my door? Can I also purchase the black hairy strip which you can see on the photo? Not sure what it is called.

Please advice if it is possible to replace the broken wheel without taking apart the entire door.

Is it possible to get a photo aimed up at the rollers showing the underside of the door? Also, is there anything like a screw or rivet on the other side of the door?

Typically, roller door carriages are held in place with a couple of screws or rivets on the underside of the frame, a screw going through the frame, or they clip in.

It seems likely yours simply clip in place, in which case, I would just grab a small flathead screwdriver and try prying them out. A pair of needle nose pliers could also help if you need to grip on to them.

During my time in stores, I have helped many customers with this kind of thing and because there are so many that look similar, the best way to do it is place them next to each other to compare.

We sell a wide variety of roller carriages, so there is a very good chance we have a replacement, but you'll have to get them out and bring them in store to match them up.

If you can't find a way to pop them out based on my advice, please share a few more photos and I will do my best to assist further.

I have uploaded a few extra photos.

There are no rivets or screws visible that could be holding the the rollers.

I can only see 2 rivets on each corner of the door which I suspect hold the door frame together. These rivets are visible on the first two photos I posted earlier.

Can you see anything down this hole and is there another one in the same location at the other end of the door?

If you put a phillips head screwdriver down that hole and rotate it anticlockwise, does the carriage seem to loosen or adjust up and down?

Does it feel like there is any movement at all if you pry them with a screwdriver, or does it feel like part of the carriage is hitting the inside of the frame preventing it from coming out?

I think it is pretty likely that you have a carriage, like this Rolltrak Adjustable Aluminium Carriage And Acetal Roller which has an adjustment screw on the end which might line up with the hole in the end of your door frame. If that is the case, then unfortunately, I'd say it is fairly likely that you will have to disassemble the frame by drilling out the rivets, replace the carriage and then reinstall the rivets.

The other wheel, they one that works fine, is there a chance you can take a photo of that? As @JacobZ has mentioned, Bunnings does have a fair range of sliding door wheels/carriages available but getting the right one is a bit of a pain. The reason why I ask for a pic of the good one is to see if it can be pulled out or levered out. This way you can go into Bunnings and see if something matches.

As an alternative, once you have it out and if you cannot find a match in Bunnings then head to a large glazier company. I did this for the runners for my windows for replacement. They had the smae type I was after. The problem tho becomes if you keep sliding the door over the aluminium rail, its like sharpening a knife. replacement rollers wont last as long and eventually you will need to get a cover for the roller track (have seen it done on window repair places but not in real life)

If you feel that its chancy trying to leaver the wheels out it may be better to get a window repair person out so they can assess your track at the same time as replacing the wheels.

I repair these quite regularly. The hole in the side is only to adjust the wheel carriage up and down to lift the door above the track and to align it square to the door frame with the other roller. Soot has nothing to do with removal of the carriage.

What I can’t figure out is how to remove the carriage from the photos. The wheels typically click into the carriage via their axles and can be pried out with a flat blade screwdriver. But I can’t even see the axles.

By the angle of the black plastic sticking out it appears that the carriage could be broken. Though Bunnings have a great range of replacements I’m unable to help how to remove the parts to get you there.

It’s a bit radical but I would consider going in hard with a flat blade screwdriver and try and force the carriage out as there doesn’t appear to be any fasteners. Alternatively you may have to get a specialised sliding door repairer.

I have finally decided to disassemble the door to investigate further. See the photos attached.

The screw which is supposed to adjust the wheel up and down does absolutely nothing. I suspect, something is broken inside or some internal parts are missing. There should be something between the screw and the wheel.

When the door is installed, the wheels fully retract inside under the weight of the door which causes the door to scratch against the tracks.

I would appreciate further advice.

Does Bunnings sell this type of wheel assembly?

Hi @alex27,

Without the adjustable height function working, there isn’t really anything you can do to fix this apart from replacing the entire corner section.

Unfortunately, this appears to be a proprietary piece designed specifically for your door, and our carriage and roller supplier does not manufacture them.

It looks like there are some markings and possibly a product code stamped on the plastic. Reaching out to the manufacturer with those details would likely be your best option.

There might be a possible alternative to your corner section assembly. I propose having a look at the Rolltrak Adjustable Plastic Corner Stake Carriage And Acetal Roller. It is very close looking to the one that you have but you'll need to check if the wheel assembly will fit into the existing hole under the door. My best advice is to bring your old corner assembly with you to the store and matching it with the Rolltrak carriage to make sure that they are compatible.

If @EricL's suggestion dosnt work I would head off to the largest window glazier and take your roller with you. They may recognise the brand and if lucky have spares you can purchase.
