recently moved into a new house. I need to replace the cartridge in these taps. How do I remove the tap handle to access it?
Taps look like Mondella pin ones from Bunnings
Hello @dchin
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your tapware.
Please note that plumbing work needs to be completed by a licensed professional for safety and compliance.
Looking at the picture you posted, you've managed to remove the handle and the grub screw that is holding the handle in place. Generally speaking, there should be nothing holding the tap handle in place. I suggest holding the body of the handle and pulling it up. If the handle does not pull out, I suggest using a flathead screwdriver with a tea towel covering the flathead.
Gently put the flathead screwdriver between the tap handle and the flange and use it to lever the handle upwards. Go around the handle and do not use excessive force. Your goal is to slowly lift the handle up and get it off the spindle. Once you have the handle off you can then identify the type of spindle that you have and replace it with a new one.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
Eric
thank you Eric. I’ve tried it. Won’t budge at all. Any other ideas?
One other method you can try is to rock the handle left and right, forwards and backwards. It's possible that the handle has seized onto the spindle head. If it still refuses to move, I can only suggest engaging the services of a registered plumber. They may have a tool that will remove the handle off the spindle.
Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Noyade for their recommendations.
Good Evening @dchin
I was going down the same route as @EricL's suggested way of removing the tap hgead. I have two ideas obnly because that first idea didnt work.
Option 1 - Check down where the tap handle screws in, inside is there any other screws or allen keys?
Option 2 Have you tried turning thge tap like normal since you have removed the center grub screw?
Dave
Thx Dave. No grub screw. Tap turns as normal. Is there a tool to remove stuck taps?
Hi @dchin,
There is the Haron Tap Handle Puller. If the gap between the handle and cover flange is large enough to fit the claws into, it could assist with the handle removal. Just be aware that it could mark or scratch the chrome plating of the handle.
Mitchell
Thx Mitchell. there is the top of the tap to pull against with that device. The tap is solid like an upside down cup.
any ideas on how I can use that device still?
So sorry, @dchin, my mistake. As you've picked up on, that tap puller is not designed for your style of tap. My best advice is to continue on with a large wide-blade flathead screwdriver, to try and lever the tap head up and off the spindle. It really needs to be a larger-sized one to provide the leverage you need. Mitchell
