hi need advise to buy a router and router bits to make the two cuts on top and bottom. Also do i need any router jig to do the job. Need advise to best action this. I need router for a one off job only.
Hi @antrix_bansal,
Those concealed sliding door kits do look fantastic, but they can be quite demanding to install and they aren’t always compatible with typical internal doors.
One important thing to be aware of is that most internal doors are hollow-core, meaning they have a thin timber skin with a cardboard honeycomb inside. The rebates required at the top and bottom of the door for these concealed roller systems are quite deep, and routing into a hollow-core door will usually break into the internal cavity. Because of that, these kits generally can’t be used with standard hollow internal doors.
You could potentially use a solid door, such as a solid-core internal door or even an external door, but then you need to check the weight rating of the hardware. Solid external doors can easily be around 35–40 kg, so the kit must be rated for that.
Regarding the tools:
Because the grooves need to be very straight and accurately positioned, you’ll usually need to make a simple jig or guide (often just a straight edge clamped to the door) to run the router against. After routing, you’ll likely still need chisels to square up the ends of the rebates.
This is a job requires a high level of DIY skill or experience with using routers previously. You might wish to consider having a handyperson or carpenter make these adjustments for you.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Morning @MitchellMc and @antrix_bansal
Why the bottom rollers? If the door is 'suspended' the rollers would be superfluous - especially if you install that 'floor guide'?
And has Amazon shopped out the right side of the rail in the door photo?
@MitchellMc @Noyade thanks for responding. I do have a solid-core internal door 38mm 2170 x870 . I need to cut the track length to match the door width. Currently planning to go with instructions as advised by supplier will post if any issues. If it does not work out , will buy a barn door kit.
