How to childproof kitchen entry?

Trying to install gates to secure our kitchen area. We have a wall on the left on this phone, and a cabinet on the right. They're not aligned unfortunately so I'm after ideas of how gates would be installed to childproof this area. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you for sharing your question about installing a child proof gate. I suggest adding timber onto the side where the microwave oven is. I recommend using 90 x 45mm Framing MGP10 Untreated Pine 2.4m. You can cut the timber down to smaller pieces and screw them together to make up the difference in distance with the other wall on the other side. I propose screwing the timber to the base end panel of the microwave cabinet.

Please note that it will leave holes in the panel, but it can be patched and painted over. You also have the option of changing the panel in the future. In the meantime, the added timber will serve as the anchor for the child proof gate. I propose looking at the Perma Child Safety White Extra Wide Easy Fit Baby Gate or the Perma Child Safety White Extra Tall And Wide Superior Swing Gate if the gap is very big.

I suggest using the Zenith 10G x 65mm Gold Passivated Countersunk Rib Head Chipboard Screws to attach the timber to the base end panel and to attach the timber to each other. The gate can then be screwed to the additional timber and the wall on the other side. To disguise the timber pieces, I suggest painting it the same colour as your wall or kitchen.

I've installed one of these at the top of a mates stairs to stop his dog coming down when they have visitors It works very well, strong, easy to install on opening not even like yours.

My thoughts went the same way @EricL has described.

If you want to save putting holes in your end panel, you could remove it first (the screws hopefuly will be on the inside next to the nicrowave on the right. Remove and replace with a sheet of plywood/MDF or something that is paintable. There may be laminate sheeting in white the same size even. Then follow @EricL's suggestion and "bump" out the post for the gate to align.

I was going to say that I think @Nailbag missed the link to the item, it almost looks the same as the normal text on my laptop. His link shows a nicer alternative. It does seem flexible but if it stops a dog then a child hopefully will stop as well :)

I'd second @Nailbag's suggestion, @rocketman. I've got almost the exact same situation in my house, and I've been using the retractable version for years now.
