I recently purchased the garden basics auto rewind hose reel (20m) and was wondering what size drill bit to use to mount it? It says to drill 4 x M8 holes but I'm not sure what size drill bit that would equate to?

The 8 mm 'seems' to be (Fig.1) for a masonry drill for the plugs into brick?

As J-P mentioned, an M8 screw has a thread diameter of 8mm, so I would assume the plug is 8mm in diameter, which would mean you need an 8mm hole.
In saying this, you would just need to measure the outside diameter of the plug to confirm.
Assuming it is indeed 8mm, then if you are drilling into masonry you need to use an 8mm masonry bit.
