How to fix a leaking sink drain pipe?

So my kitchen sink is leaking at this point (pictured below), when I drain the sink. I have tried tightening the screw (I swear I have tried tightening it while straight, not shown in picture). I have also changed out the rubber ring and adding plumber tape to the threads. None of which have worked, to stop the leaking.

Would love suggestions to be able to fix it myself. Let me know if you need any other information.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your leaking sink pipe.

The pipe above and the pipe below are joined together with what is called a flanged compression O ring. There are two sizes the Holman 40mm Trap Repair Kit and the Holman 50mm Trap Repair Kit SHPS5111. Measure the size of your pipe in order to get the correct kit. On the product photo on the website, you'll see three O rings in a row, it is the one at the very bottom that has a flange above and below it. The standard washers above must not be used.

The general steps are to unscrew plastic compression nut and replace the O ring with the correct sized flanged unit. When the two pipes meet together the O ring must be as close as possible to the threaded section of the upper pipe. Please look at the diagram which I've highlighted in yellow. Once the O ring is in place you can then start screwing the plastic compression nut that joins them together.

Please note that both pipe work must be straight and aligned with no odd angles present. Tighten the compression nut firmly but not overly tight as it will crack the plastic. Fill the sink with water and test it one more time. If a slow leak occurs turn the compression nut a bit more to secure the fitting.
