I’d like to build a fence for my raised beds to stop the dog digging what’s an easy option please.
Hello @Jersey1975
Thank you for sharing your question about your raised garden bed. I propose using https://www.bunnings.com.au/longyard-165cm-1-7kg-m-black-steel-fence-post-10-pack_p0066692 on each corner of the garden bed and driving them into the soil, one in middle on each side to provide support for the mesh. You can either use a metal mesh such as https://www.bunnings.com.au/saxon-90cm-x-10m-animal-netting_p0022281?srsltid=AfmBOooqIVnTQbss8IPZtcfeZ2B2IeuRWrsUREWFeiV5Z_EqTCnGwKz6 or something soft like the https://www.bunnings.com.au/art-bob-3000x6000-cat-safety-net-28409_p0877313 . It should be strong enough to deter your pup from going through, but if they are persistent, then it will be necessary to use the metal mesh. The mesh can be anchored in place using https://www.bunnings.com.au/crescent-100-x-2-5mm-natural-cable-ties-25-pack_p4431104 or similar.
Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Noyade for their recommendations.
Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves and goggles when working on your project.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
Eric
thank you @EricL do you think the no dig fencing would be a good option?
If you are planning on putting a divider between the garden bed and the pups play area, then yes, the https://www.bunnings.com.au/peak-no-dig-fencing-1200mm-birmingham-panel_p0952714 will definitely work. It's an excellent option if you want a larger gap between the pups and the garden bed.
Evening @Jersey1975
A wise move I would say :)
Any chance of a pic of the garden beds and also one of your doggo? I had a basset hound type dog and he serioulsy wasnt so bright…. He would walk through a wire mesh and staked garden edge like it wasnt there. So will wait for a bit more information :)
Dave
@Dave-1 thank you we’ve had to cover them for now until we can sort out a fence love your ideas thank you
Morning @Jersey1975
hahahaha Doggo has "Pure innocense" on their face….
I think you will need a solid style of fence, something your doggo just cant push through with their nose :)
@EricL's suggestion of using those pickets would work for sure, I was trying to see if there are holes along the length but if there arnt then star posts do. You could screw them to the timbers outside the box vertically instead. Then the netting that @EricL has suggested.
I like the idea of a set solid fence around your garden, think along the lines of a picket style fence with fence posts, or even a timber outer frame with corrorgated panels. More work but a long term solution. I have found netting is an annoyance when working in the garden beds. (Use an upside down container over the top of the posts so the netting dosnt get ripped so easily)
I came across this while looking for an example of a fence line for you. Its along the lines that @EricL has suggested. (Cant find the fence line. If you cant picture it I can try sketching one up later. (how far to the right and left is the yard?)
@Dave-1 i agree a picket fence would look really nice what solutions do Bunnings have in that regard? I don’t want to screw to the beds as I’d like to be to still access all sides of them.
Lottie is a naughty puppy loves dirty water and mounds of anything dirty. But we adore her. Butter wouldn’t melt… thanks so much
Good Afternoon @Jersey1975
I have used these earth screw stirrup posts for a tall pribacy screen. I think they would work well for a fence, especially a Picket styled fence.
I used an off cut as a turning tool with a G clamp and pry bar. With your yard being open you could use a pry bar, piece of timber or crowbar. You nee dto put a constant pressure ontop of them as you screw them into the ground. If it hits rocks :/ you will need a normal concrete fotting and stirrup then.
With A corral of the area of your garden beds you could use these for each of the posts. Then two horizontal rails for the pickets between the rails. You could overlap the rails to the posts if you were not worried about having the fence rail match up. (easier install) I have seen the shortened pickets at Bunnings
There are straight ones as well. It may be an idea to drop in to the fencing aisle in your local bunnings and see what they have in quantity :)
Depending on how your yard works you only need three sides or maybe two. (add another garden bed to fill a slightly larger space)
thanks @Dave-1 that may be a bit outside of my skill set. Would the no digging fence work instead? Be strong enough?
Afternoon @Jersey1975
If its that black fence you push into the ground…..
I think your doggo would laugh at it as they walk through it :) Is a viewable detterant, I dont think it would be strong enough for your doggo. You could try and it would be an interesting experiment tho.
Just finishe da sketch, it shows overlapping rails (green ends) so you dont need to do anything more then drill the rails and the posts and put two bolts per rail through them.
The Pink are the earth screws. Easy enough if you dont have rocks under the ground.
The green is the stay to stop the gate sagging, The bottom of the diagonal should be closest to the hinge.
Am interested in the no dig fence so if you do try would love to hear how it goes.
thanks @Dave-1 and for the drawing. Could I ask you to do me a dumb idiots guide to what I need and how to do it please?
It kind of depends on the size of the yard you are wanting to build.
However I will list the parts that come to mind.
I just had a look for "How to build a picket fence bunnings and got this :)
I you have any other questions just let us know.
thanks @Dave-1 i think I’ll try the no dig first that project is way too big for me
So kind of you to send so much detail
