How to install shade sails using timber posts?

I want to install shade sails on 2.4m 90 x 90 wooden posts & I want to cement anchors for them but am unsure what size hole I need to dig & which anchor would be best as it can get quite windy here. Also, how much cement would I need for 4 posts? Cheers Barry

Thank you for sharing your question about installing a shade sail in your home. The depth of your post will depend on the size of the shade sail you'll be installing. Plus, it will also involve your current location, the type of weather that is generated in your area including the type of soil you have. There are many forces acting on the shade sail both static and dynamic. While the shade sail is still, the anchors only need to hold the weight of the sail which is relatively easy. But when the wind starts blowing onto the sail the pressure generated can reach as high as 500kg of force. That force is transferred to the anchor and post of the sail and if it is not properly secure will rip out the anchor or pull the post from its foundation.

In this particular instance, I suggest engaging the services of a professional installer or structural engineer to draw up a structural plan for you so that you can be secure in the knowledge that your posts are anchored at the proper depth and that the width of the foundation hole is sufficient to hold the forces generated by the sail. I also recommend checking your local council's rules and regulations in regards to the installation of shade sails. There may be size and height limitations when installing shade sails in your home. In regards to the hooks, your installer or engineer will also provide you with the necessary information.
