How to fix large gaps between exterior door & frame

Question

Hi! Recently got a new exterior door for my bedroom balcony and have come across gaps between the door and the frame in mutiple places. The gaps are letting in wind and rain. I am hoping to find a solution to this problem, or a low-costing fix. Any advice or recommendations are welcomed and appreaciated.

Firstly is the door loose when closed or in other words is there movement in the door when you push/pull the door? If so, then the striker plate hasn't been install correctly to the door latch and needs to be repositioned further back into the door jamb. However using weather shield strips around the door frame will most likely solve the issue. You just need to have a look at the gap from the outside as the weathersheild products coming in different thicknesses. Too thick and the door won't close. Use a Raven automatic weathersheild on the bottom. These are very effective and one I install regularly. You will need a hacksaw to trim it to length.

I would second both the options that @EricL has suggested. I have used the first option on my front door for years and it really sealed the door.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your door frame.

First thing I would suggest is looking at how the hinges are installed on the door. If they are rebated, then it is installed correctly. Because the gap near the hinges is very minimal, I recommend putting in a

. This should sufficiently cover any gap and stop wind from passing through the frame.

However, the gap at the front door is quite significant, I propose measuring the gap and seeing if you can find a timber mould piece that you can use as a packer. I recommend looking at the

. It can be attached using liquid nails and screws. Once it is installed you can then prime and paint it to match your door frame colour. My best advice is to double check the size of the gap so that you can find a suitable timber packer.
