How to fix skylight corner coming loose?

Hi all,

I'm just looking for some advice on a fix for a skylight that has one corner coming loose from the ceiling. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like there is enough plasterboard left for the screws to bite into and pull the corner back flush with the ceiling.

I have toyed with the idea of using an anchor of some kind but there's barely enough space to manoeuvre one in above the plasterboard and it would only be supported on one side as the otherside would be the skylight itself.

How would you go about fixing this? Also the house is a bit older so I'm being cautious about potential asbestos as it hasn't yet been tested.

We recently had a similar question asked about a vent cover. I suggested at the time to install timber support on the edge of the cut out on the other side of the ceiling board so that its hidden (please have a look at image below). However, I am in agreement with you in your concern about asbestos. I propose having it tested before you cut or drill into the surface of the panel.

If the test is positive, I suggest engaging the services of an asbestos removal specialist. Please do not attempt to make any modifications to your ceiling until all the asbestos has been safely removed by the specialist.

But, on the condition that the test is negative, I suggest putting in some strips of https://www.bunnings.com.au/42-x-19mm-2-4m-dar-pine-premium_p8401458 . I suggest cutting it to the size of the cut out and using liquid nails and some standard timber screws to fix it in place. This will act as a support for the edge of the cut out and you can screw the skylight housing edge onto the timber edging.
