How to build a bed frame?

Building a bed frame and wanting to build the slats out of 90*35 pine timber. I bought some from Bunnings last week but just want to confirm, mgp10 seasoned pine studs have no treatment applied to them? I ask because the little grooves that run along the timber asleep similar to those I see on the treated pine which I think has a T2 or T3 treatment. I thought these were associated with a pressure treatment process?

Hi @john85,

Grooved timber is often referred to in the industry as “rougher header”, and those grooves are simply part of the machining process rather than anything to do with treatment.

The timber usually starts out at a larger, nominal size, for example around 100 by 38 mm. It then goes through a drying process, which is what “seasoned” refers to, and this causes the timber to shrink slightly as moisture is removed.

After drying, the timber is machined down to its final size. During this planing process, the grooves are formed, giving it that “rougher header” finish.

So no, the grooves do not necessarily mean that there is a treatment in the timber.

If it were treated, then the timber would be either blue or a greeny colour in Australia and pink or a greeny colour in New Zealand.

If you can let me know the item number listed on your receipt, I can certainly double check to be 100% certain if you'd like me to.

Thank you for sharing those photos. An easier way to tell if the timber is untreated is to look at your docket. It should indicate KD-UT (kiln dried - untreated). If you can show us just the section of the docket that indicates the purchase, it should have details about the product. Please do not post the entire docket. You can also provide is with the seven-digit product number of the timber. For example, https://www.bunnings.co.nz/75-x-50mm-green-sawn-industrial-radiata-pine-untreated_p0310843 I/N 0310843. This bit of information will tell us what kind of timber you have with you. You can also view this information on the Bunnings NZ website; it tells you if a product is treated or untreated.
