Affordable laundry makeover with Kaboodle cabinetry

The project:

A long time ago back in 2018 I posted an example of a laundry makeover - Affordable laundry makeover. It was composed of four cabinets and a washing machine and a single laundry tub.

I've now changed the tawny green acrylic splashback and have gone with a patterned neutral grey tile. These days there are also more choices for door colours and timber benchtops. Almost any custom cabinet size can be accommodated.

This four-cabinet makeover can easily be assembled and put into position for installation in a day. However, keep in mind that the plumber and electrician will need to drill into the cabinet to organize the plumbing and power point.

What is the width of the board that seems to match perfectly the depth dimension of the washing machine?

The benchtop used in this layout is the https://www.bunnings.com.au/specrite-2200-x-600-x-26mm-timber-multi-use-pine-panel_p0419616 . Generally speaking, the washing machine must be installed as close as possible to the wall so that it does not sit proud of the benchtop. However, some units are not designed that way, and their hoses get in the way and force the unit to be pushed past the benchtop.

The solutions include cutting the wall and creating a cavity for the washing machine hoses and washing machine to be pushed back further. Another option is to build a timber spacer frame behind the cabinets so that they are in line with the washing machine. You would then need to get a larger benchtop such as the https://www.bunnings.com.au/specrite-2400-x-900-x-33mm-timber-multi-use-pine-panel_p0419614 and cut it down to size.

The area/wall is going pear shaped on me and is only 2 metres wide. I was hoping for cupboards above a newly purchased dryer which sits on a front loader that extends from the wall around 850mm. End result is I feel very little trying to reach above the dryer. Cupboards won't work. The dryer at the back has a drum 'protrusion' which forces it away from the wall compounded by taps and power-points. The walls most certainly have asbestos fibro.

The shelving seen in the background are 'floating' above a sink which is accessible - just.

It’s a little difficult to judge the distances from the image alone @Noyade. Roughly how far is it from your hand position to the wall behind the machines?

Also, what is the ceiling made from? If the ceiling itself isn’t asbestos, one option could be to attach a frame or support from the ceiling so the shelving could sit closer to the front edge of the machines rather than hard against the wall. That may bring the items within a much more comfortable reach.

Top of the dryer is 185cm. My hand is about 75cm away from the wall. From the top of the dryer to the ceiling is 90cm. The machines are around 70 cm in width - so it's a good sized area to utilise - if possible.

I'm willing to try a small stepladder to access the space.

Sadly @MitchellMc I suspect asbestos fibro is everywhere.

Is there enough space on either side to accommodate a frame that could sit on the floor @Noyade?

Something like this rendering, which I've created. Then you could mount shelves on top of it as far foward as possible.

As an alternative to using the space at the top have you considered using a https://www.bunnings.com.au/dryer-stand-adjustable-for-top-loading-washing-machine-and-dryer-storage_p0403098 ? This would allow you to place a timber top piece over the washing machine and use the gap as a storage area for more items. It would theoretically maximize the use of the space in that area.

Thanks @EricL . I looked at the reviews and Helen's assessment which seems a tight fit as well, does look good. Unfortunately I would need to slice off around 150mm of my floating shelves for the Britec product's left side to fit and I'm not sure I could lift the 51 kg dryer into place. The top controls must also be very high at this point? Additionally the washer can become a broncing buck during the spin cycle, moving and tossing things left on the top, off. At this stage I'll preserver with a home made shelf system utilising the wall/ceiling. I'll keep you posted. Cheers.
