How to remove rust staining from rendered brick exterior?

Hi BW Community,

The previous owners of our house had a basketball hoop attached to the rendered brick wall.

I've removed the hoop but its left 3x screw ends and rust staining.

Is there a way to remove the rust staining or certainly reduce it?

Should i angle grind the screw ends?

Any help would be great!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about removing rust from your render.

I propose testing https://www.bunnings.com.au/diggers-2kg-rust-and-stain-cleaner_p0960276 on a small section of the rust stain and see if it washes it off. Please make sure to read the application instructions if it needs to be diluted. Make sure to wash and rinse the wall thoroughly as you don't want any of the washed off rust deluge to settle on another part of the wall. I also suggest using https://www.bunnings.com.au/sabco-25cm-natural-fibre-deck-scrub_p0252326 to scrub the wall.

It appears that they used Dynabolts on the wall, I suggest tapping the bolts back into the wall and use long nose pliers to grab onto the sleeve of the bolt and try to twist it out. The objective is to keep the bolt down so that it does not twist or lodge with the sleeve as you are trying to pull it out. When the sleeve comes out the bolt can then be removed. I don't recommend keeping the bolt in the wall as it will continue to rust.

I would be inclined to try this CLR product first which doesnt contain any bleaching agent that would essentially white-wash the colour out of the render

I would be following @EricL's suggested way to remove the dynabolts, I have done that many times and its slow and steady, one by one and walk away when you want to use the grinder :) It works but time is what it takes.

Those old basketball hoop mounts can definitely leave a bit more of a mess behind than expected once they come off.

Did you end up managing to get the dynabolts out and improve the rust staining? I’d be interested to hear whether the rust cleaner or CLR approach made much of a difference on the render.

Hopefully it cleaned up reasonably well, but if you’re still battling with the staining or the bolt removal, happy to help further.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve tried the CLR remover and agitated the rust with a nylon based brush. It’s definitely removed a heap of it, I repeated the process a few times. I will try again and see if i can remove more.

As for the bolts. One came out easy after tapping it with a hammer and pulling out the bolt with pliers. The other two I now have a new problem with, as tapping the bolts made them regress into the wall. Any suggestions on how I might be able to pull the bolt out? It’s proving tricky to get a hold of the end of the bolt as it’s semi flush with the wall.

Also, what should I be plugging the holes in the wall with now? We do plan to repaint the house at some point, but not right away.

Getting the bolts to travel in is perfectly fine, your goal is to push the bolts in so that you can get access to the sleeve of the Dynabolt. Once you get the sleeve out you can use a https://www.bunnings.com.au/trojan-magnetic-stud-finder_p0673723 or a https://www.bunnings.com.au/kincrome-torquemaster-magnetic-telescopic-pick-up-tool_p0468402 to slowly pull the bolt out. However, if the bolt is deep enough inside the wall, it is possible to seal it inside the wall.

In regard to filling the holes, I suggest using https://www.bunnings.com.au/earl-s-500g-concremate-expanding-cement_p1662127 to cover the holes in the wall. Once the filler cures you can then paint over the patched section.

How much more can the bolts go into the wall? As @EricL has mentioned thats where you want them to go as it gives space for the sleeve to be slowly wiggled out. I generally use a pair of long nose pliers and grab the edge of the sleeve and slowy twist while rotating my hand so the sleeve "wiggles"
