I want to secure a metal plate to a rock, what do I need to use to do this securely?

Can you please provide us with a little bit more information about what kind of rock you are attaching to, is it a flat surface, round or irregular? What kind of metal plate are you using? Without knowing the exact circumstance, the basic method of attaching something to a stone is to use masonry anchors, which come in a few different styles such as https://www.bunnings.com.au/products/building-hardware/fasteners-fixings/wall-floor-anchors/sleeve-anchors , https://www.bunnings.com.au/products/building-hardware/fasteners-fixings/wall-floor-anchors/screw-bolts or https://www.bunnings.com.au/products/building-hardware/fasteners-fixings/wall-floor-anchors/chemical-anchors .
All of these options will require you to drill a hole in the stone first, which can be done using a rotary hammer drill with a masonry bit in the correct size for your anchor.
If the surface is uneven, things like washers and packers can often be used to even out the attachment.

It's actually the plate off my Grandparents headstone which the Cemetery was going to throw away since the lease had expired & their only remaining loving son, my uncle said he didn't want, nor did he tell any of the remaining relatives so I took it & thought I'd attach it to one the big rocks in our backyard that look like Granite to me.
Thank you for that extra information. The plate should anchor nicely with either the suggested anchors or adhesive.
