Just wondering how I can patch repair this door (see photo). Once it's repaired, I am going to paint the whole door. Thanks in advance.
Hi @reno-abc,
To repair that damage, you'll first need to remove any loose, splintered or protruding material so you're left with a solid surface to work with.
Pay particular attention to any sections of the door skin (veneer) that have started to detach around the damaged area. As these sections pull away from the face of the door, they become proud of the surrounding surface and will show through the repair. Any loose veneer should either be glued and clamped back into place until fully bonded, or cut away completely if it can't be resecured.
Once the area is stable, fill the damaged section with Builder's Bog, applying it in a few layers if required to build the repair up slightly proud of the door's surface. After the filler has fully cured, sand it back flush with the surrounding area using 180-grit sandpaper until the surface is smooth and even.
Finish by applying a couple of coats of primer to seal the repair, and then once dry, paint the entire door for a consistent finish. I've added a AI-rendering of what the bottom should look like after you've filled and sanded back flush. Please let me know if you have any questions.

G'day @MitchellMc.
Dunno how you do it - but your AI images are remarkable! You even have the Bog colour down pat. Did you also add 'sanding dust' to the floor and door edge at the bottom?
Keep up the good work!
@MitchellMc Thanks.
Your AI-generated picture looks so real, especially the sanded edge - it's exactly the same as what I achieved.
Now, further question -
Can you tell what paint was originally used on the 1980s door? It doesn't look like water- or oil-based paint. Thanks.
Hello @reno-abc
It appears that the door was originally painted with a clear or varnish sealer. It might have had a stain, or it could be the natural reaction of the timber to the sealer. With the patching repair that was suggested, it won't be possible to paint or seal the door in the same manner as the colour of the sealer will be seen. In this instance the door will need to be painted in a solid colour.
