How to address crack in brickwork?

Question

We have a 1.5-2 mm crack in brickwork. Crack is vertical and runs largely through mortar but through a few bricks. I am just wondering if 1. Should get someone in to look at it (and if so what tradesperson is best ? ) and 2. If can do self, whats best steps to repair?

I also agree with both @JacobZ and @Dave-1 comments. The fact that solid bricks in alternate courses are split indicates a structural issue, possibly with the footings. I worked on a property last year where the owners had neglected for at least a decade to replace the rusted out guttering on the garage. The rain water over time had deteriorated the ground to such an extent that footings were breaking apart. The breaking apart of the brickwork was far more extreme and widespread than your scenario being on all 4 sides leaving that the only resolution as a full rebuild.

My advise would be to employ a "domestic structural engineer" as they are the most qualified to diagnose and report on the cause what will be required to repair.

I would be heading towards a structual engineer. I dont like the crack through the bricks and think it would be worthwhile knowing why and what's going on. They would also be able to recommend what type of trade is needed for repairing the crack or to stop it expanding. Houses do settle and it could be just that (over a long time) but it would play on my thoughts so better to be wise then have it in the back of your head.

If the crack was only in the mortar joints, I generally wouldn't be overly concerned, as mortar can crack due to normal movement over time. However, the fact that the crack is also running through the bricks themselves makes it more noteworthy and worth investigating further.

Unfortunately, there isn't a great D.I.Y. solution. While it is possible to fill or patch the crack, doing so would only be cosmetic and could potentially hide ongoing movement. Having a professional assess and recommend a solution is the best course of action from here.

I'd recommend having it assessed by either a licensed builder, who is experienced with brick construction or, if you want the most definitive advice, a structural engineer. They will be able to determine whether the cracking is simply historic movement that has now stabilised or whether there is an underlying issue that needs attention.
