Hi everyone,
I am looking for some advice regarding a doorway that was recently opened in an internal timber-framed wall in my house.
I hired a carpenter to create a new doorway and doing some other jobs, but unfortunately he has not completed the all jobs. He initially said he would return to finish the other works, however he has stopped responding to my calls and messages. He has also not come back to collect the payment, which has made me concerned that there may be an issue with the work.
My main concern is that there was a diagonal timber brace in this wall before the doorway was installed. To create the opening, the carpenter cut through and removed part of the diagonal brace. From what I understand, this brace may have been providing structural bracing for the wall.
I have attached photos showing:
- The wall before the doorway was opened.
- The wall after the doorway was installed.
- The framing around the new doorway.
- The diagonal brace that was cut.
Could anyone with framing or carpentry experience please advise:
- Does the doorway framing look correct?
- Is the header/lintel above the door adequate?
- Was it acceptable to cut the diagonal brace, or should alternative bracing have been installed?
- Does anything in these photos look concerning or non-compliant?
- What should I check before I proceed with plasterboard and finishing?
I understand it may not be possible to give a definitive answer from photos alone, but I would really appreciate any feedback from experienced builders or carpenters.
Thank you.
