How to DIY exposed aggregate and sleeper driveway?

Hello

I want to create my driveway similar to attached image. I've got a compacted road base and will put sleepers down. I've got loads of pea gravel I'd like to reuse. Initially I was going to just put them in between sleepers, closer gap than shown, approx 30cm gap between sleepers. However I don't love the orange/brown colour. Is it possible to diy exposed aggregate with a light creamy shade to soften the look. I'm not after a super professional finish, just an idea....

Yes, the look in the photo can be recreated as a DIY project, but safety and long-term durability need to be considered carefully, especially if the driveway will be used regularly by cars, utes, trailers, or heavier vehicles. The visual effect is relatively simple, with sleepers laid perpendicular to the direction of travel and a decorative infill between them. However, what looks attractive as a landscape feature does not always perform well as a driveway surface, so the structural requirements should not be overlooked.

One of the key considerations is the timber sleepers themselves. They will need to be capable of supporting the weight of vehicles and must be securely anchored to prevent movement over time. If sleepers are not adequately supported and restrained, repeated vehicle loading can cause them to shift, settle unevenly, or deteriorate prematurely.

The surface material between the sleepers is equally important. While reusing pea gravel is certainly possible, loose pea gravel alone is generally not ideal as a traffic surface. Under vehicle loads it can migrate, rut, and scatter, particularly when vehicles are turning, braking, or accelerating. Light vehicles may not cause significant issues initially, but even regular passenger vehicles can gradually displace the gravel, while heavier vehicles will accelerate wear and maintenance requirements.

For a more durable solution that still achieves the desired appearance, it may be worth considering a light-coloured exposed aggregate concrete infill between the sleepers. A creamy or off-white aggregate blend can soften the overall look considerably compared with orange or brown pea gravel while also providing a stronger and more stable driving surface.

Drainage is another important consideration. One advantage of the original driveway style is that water can naturally flow down the driveway and infiltrate between the surface materials. If loose aggregate is used, drainage performance will generally be excellent, although ongoing maintenance is likely to be higher. If exposed aggregate concrete is selected, the driveway will need to maintain an appropriate fall to prevent water ponding.

Overall, the look can definitely be recreated and can be made safe for vehicles, but it would be advisable to engage the services of a professional driveway specialist. Hi @DIYH

Check out your larger local garden supplies for their range of "10-15mm River Pebbles". They are smooth pebbles that come in a range of colours based on the river/region they are sourced from. The fine ones will have more dust in them that will compact down to that finish your after. You could also mix in a little cement dust and water that in. Then hire a compactor to compress each section down. Add more mix and compact until each section is level with the top of the sleepers.

Another thing you can add to hold the gravel in place is a waffle style plastic grid. Pebble lock and by the look of it you can get them in pallets of 100 for cheaper. One thing to remember is that everything will want to run downhill all the time, the slower the rise of your driveway the more chance you have of keeping the peagravel stable. Depending on how steep your yard is it may be an idea to have a switchback as part of the install.

Thanks all, Mitchell, how good is the garden glue in the heat? I've seen mixed reviews. Perth sun in summer is pretty gnarly! Ive heard it can melt into a gloopy mess!

The sun actually cures the https://www.bunnings.com.au/landscape-lock-2l-concentrated-garden-glue_p0598863 . After it cures, it forms a waterproof, flexible film that blocks UV light to prevent colours fading. Its main enemy is rain occurring during the initial 24-hour curing phase. While the glue is specifically designed to withstand wind, weathering, and light foot traffic once fully set, moisture exposure before it dries completely can ruin the binding process and wash the product away.

Eric, any info on sun? Rain isn't often a problem in summer, I'm more concerned it will melt when the season changes!

I can't find any information from the manufacturer or feedback that suggests the Landscape Lock Garden Glue will melt in high summer temperatures once it has fully cured.

Like most coatings and binders that are exposed to the elements year-round, it will gradually deteriorate over time due to UV exposure, weathering and general wear. That's why periodic reapplication is recommended to maintain performance and keep the surface looking its best.

In areas that experience particularly harsh conditions, such as Perth's hot summers, you may find the product requires more frequent maintenance than in milder climates. Similar to how a deck may need oiling more often in extreme conditions, a touch-up or reapplication schedule may be needed sooner, depending on the exposure and traffic the area receives.
