How to fix hard drive mount?

This was acquired cost free. It doesn't fit my hard drive but I intend to 'make' it fit. However the top mounting bracket is missing and I have assumed the original could rotate? Looking for thoughts on what it may have looked like and if a Bunnings piece of hardware would be an alternative. I'm not too fussed on whether it can rotate. It will hopefully be attached under a 25mm solid wood desk.

The jack is there because the internal 25cm spring has more snapping force than a bear trap. I need a 38 cm reach. This could be a complete waste of time - but I have some time.

The closest device that I think looks similar is the https://www.bunnings.com.au/tooleroo-under-desk-cpu-holder-pc-mount-adjustable-360-degree-rotation-rack_p1014486 . The reason for the tremendous spring pressure is to hold the computer casing in place. You'll notice on the picture I've placed below a "U" shaped metal plate with wings is the piece that is missing from your assembly. This plate is attached to the bottom of the table, and the "clamp" is attached to it allowing you to turn the computer case around to easily access the ports at the back.

I know your very handy with metal so it should be a piece of cake for you to recreate this "U" shaped wing and attach a bolt with a lock nut to prevent it from coming loose. I suspect you'll find a more creative way to keep it in place.

Looking closer - my PC was never gonna fit this holder. It has a side profile that rises like a ship's bow at the front with the on/off switch at the top so it can't be close to the under-surface of the desk. Centre of gravity is also an issue. The only solution I had was to make a 'stalk' which then held a 'T-section' bracket.

Looks like a Hills Hoist.

Need to drill holes. I also had to make the top clasp longer to fit 180mm.

Gonna try fitting it tomorrow.

To control the bear trap spring, I disassembled the holder and drilled two holes with a tapped M10 thread in the inner aluminium section. Reassembled - with the foot on a handrail I pulled back with one hand and as the holes matched - inserted the bolt. A YouTube of this would have looked comical. Now, when connected to the PC, undo the bolt and it should snap back to 38 cm - without any damage. The pencil line is 38.4 cm.

I won't bore you with the details - but certainly one of the most frustrating projects I've ever attempted. Hindsight says just a wooden box under the desk would have sufficed - but like my father I'm becoming rather stingy in old age. Three electrodes, left over spray paint and steel with some electricity.

Worth it in the end - but I wouldn't make a career outta doing this. You were right about that spring @EricL - absolutely crucial to have that bear-trap tension. Off the floor and rock steady. Cheers.

I think your computers worth is often determined by what it can still do for you. If you can surf the web, play media, do office work and the perhaps play the odd game here and there, then it's perfectly fine.

Way back in the past when I still had a dial up modem, I used to buy the biggest PC case I could get as I wanted to install so many extra disc readers and other peripherals. Now that I look back what a waste it was. Everything gets phased out and technology just moves too fast to ever hold onto anything. I still have a micro-SD card reader that's just a rusty paper weight now. Mini PC's like the one you have is the way to go these days. 😁

Ahh Dial up modems, Telstra T200 phones used to have a capacitor that kept the memory dials and every time it charged up, it killed the connection! I had to get a sound card for a job and it was a usb stick! So USB hubs are now the go. I still use an SD card reader by the way The thing that makes things so much smaller are SSDs and cloud storage!
