How to fix concrete verandah holes and cracks?

I Have a concrete verandeh with some holes and cracks i need to repair.

Does it matter if its concrete or cement?

It does not have a cover from outSide weather.

The diy i mostly do is sanding and painting. So treat me like a concrete newbie.

So any instructionS and tips would be great.

Also a list on what to buy.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your concrete veranda.

Thank you for sharing that photo of your veranda. It appears that the damage to the cement surface is more serious than just a hole on its surface. You'll notice that the top section has sunk and given way. I suspect that this was caused by water ingress and as water started to flow into this damaged section it weakened the soil base causing the concrete above to fail.

Would it be possible for you to provide a wider photo of the veranda? Specifically, the full surface area and how far the damage has travelled. Generally speaking, if the sunken section can be topped up with soil and road base to repair the area, then it would be possible to top it up with concrete mix and fix the damage. But before you go in that direction, we would like to see how far the damage has travelled. This will allow us to give you a comprehensive recommendation on repair options.

I'm sorry if I gave you a scare, there is no need to worry, it was just an observation on my part. But thank you for sharing those extra photos of your veranda. What are some of things that we can assess from the photos you've shared? First there is no bottom access which means that the repairs will have to be conducted from the top. Second, there is no damage to the surrounding edges of the veranda, so the structure is still sound. Third, if the damage is only in the middle, then it might be possible to fill the gap with road base and fill the remainder with concrete mix.

I propose removing the cover plates you've put on the top and assessing if the damage is very deep. If it appears that it is not so deep, then you can apply my suggested repair solution. However, you also have the option of getting a trades person to assess the damage and have them patch the broken section.

Actually looking forward to see what your patio looks like without the plates and stuff over it :) You have to start somewhere and a clean deck is the perfect spot to start.

As a start have a look through my project to repair my patios concrete :) It may feel scary but like you I had never done any concreting that had to look pretty before. Concrete in holes for posts yes, for a patio no.

So from your first photos whichever way you go, all the loose stuff in the holes has to be removed. There seems to be a largish piece that may be a pain to lift up (wiggling it or turning it about may work) if not let us know in here and we will think of some ways forward. As @EricL has said the good part is it still is solid. The hole may need to be filled below the level of concrete but will wait for a photo of that to go forward.

As a side question, what is the concrete like under the black pots? And how many holes do you have all up?
Never worry about what state things are in :) Its just part of the trip and everyone of us in here have had the same nervousness.

The family has alway hated the Front verandah . Because there Is no privacy and no cover

But my sister and me used to dance on it. Never was it pretty.

We had level 7 rain on wednesday for 5 hours. I have taken away some of the tiles and plates i did peek more in the holes there was broken bits of concrete. If pulled out would make the hole bigger but there was broken bits under the top layer.

Dave-1 I like your Concrete Patio Repair. I have no experience with concrete at all.

The only reason i am touching the concrete is because my mum admited she is scared she could fall through it. And i can not put a ladder on 3 sections without thinking it now. So there goes painting and checking out that gutter..

That concrete looks like it may need a reasonable amount of work. I cant quiet tell because of the stuff still on the patio but it looks pretty decent cracks/holes. Is it a cavity underneath? I am starting to think it may not be a DIY project to attempt on a first try.

Photo list that would help us out -

patio empty of everything, swept back to remove any debris (overall shot)
Closer shot showing in one photo the largest crack and hole
shot showing that main section of slab and of the crack goes all the way across.
Photo showing a ruler or tape measure down the hole with the tape measure next to the hole. (to get an idea of the depth of the hole)

Thats about all that comes to mind for now, they will show if any others are needed. nd yeah, no point in playing in the rain :)

The list of photos @Dave-1 mentioned will surely help.

The main things that we need to gauge, is how deep those holes are, and if there is erosion beneath the concrete.

If the holes are not particularly deep, it may be a simple case of preparing the holes, then pouring some concrete in them. Fingers crossed this is the case, but the way the concrete has sunk makes me think there is a slightly bigger issue at play.

If the holes are deep, then it may be indicative of a wider issue as the substrate may have eroded. If this is the case, simply filling the holes might not be possible and a larger repair might be necessary.

When you can provide those photos, we can certainly have another look and see what approach would be best.

Remove all the 'fig leaves' and see exactly what the damage is or appears to be. Google a concreter in your area, make telephone contact and show them your photos. At least then you will have a professional's opinion and maybe a repair quote.

Then we move on from there. Whatdoya think?
