The project:
I transformed an open timber staircase into a feature staircase with a cosy under-stair reading nook, hidden storage and bespoke details throughout. Using Bunnings materials including framing timber, plasterboard, VJ panelling and paint, alongside custom elements such as pressed tin detailing and stained glass, I created a warm, welcoming space that makes every square metre count. Natural timber treads, handcrafted arch details, custom drawers, a painted timber handrail and recessed stair lighting highlight the traditional character and modern practicality of this transformed space, creating a cosy reading nook that has become one of my favourite places to relax.

- Step 1:
Preparing and redesigning the staircase area
I removed the original open staircase rails and redesigned the space to create a more functional and cohesive feature area. An unnecessary under-stair window was removed and the opening was closed off, allowing the space to become part of the new staircase design.
- Step 2:
Creating the new staircase structure
I framed the open side of the staircase using timber framing to create a finished wall structure while incorporating hidden storage beneath the stairs. The existing besser brick wall was prepared and lined with plasterboard before being finished, sanded and painted.
- Step 3:
Creating the custom storage area
I designed and built a concealed storage area beneath the stairs, creating a custom timber panel door with gold hinges and a matching handle to blend with the overall design.
- Step 4:
Building the under-stair reading nook
I designed and constructed a cosy reading nook within the staircase enclosure, including framing the curved arch detail and creating the base structure for the daybed.
- Step 5:
Creating custom joinery and functional details
I built custom drawers with arched fronts to match the reading nook design, added VJ panelling, shelving and decorative details to create practical storage while maintaining a cohesive look.
- Step 6:
Adding feature materials and character
I installed pressed tin detailing beneath each stair tread, creating texture, depth and visual interest while connecting the staircase design with other features throughout the home.
- Step 7:
Enhancing the staircase with a feature window
I removed the existing aluminium window at the base of the stairs and replaced it with a second-hand leadlight window, adding warmth, character and a traditional element to the space.
- Step 8:
Painting and finishing the transformation
I painted the staircase enclosure, walls, handrail and reading nook using a coordinated colour palette. The timber stair treads were finished with Feast Watson Hard Wax Oil to enhance and protect the natural timber.
- Step 9:
Installing lighting and completing functional details
I installed recessed stair wall lighting with switching accessible from both levels, highlighting the timber treads and pressed tin detailing while improving functionality.
- Step 10:
Styling the finished reading nook
I completed the transformation with a mattress, cushions, throws, books and decorative pieces, creating a warm and inviting reading retreat that makes use of previously unused space.
